ex2010 sp2 and ex2003 sp2 mixed. All our ex2003 stores are enabled with journal to a mailbox on a ex2003 store which is not journal enabled. ex2010 has HT journal rule enalbed for all messages to the same journal mailbox on ex2003. We found duplicate only for emails exchanged between ex2010 and 2003, even disabled HT journal rule.

I’m reading this article and have some questions. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997918.aspx

"Exchange 2010 also reads the Exchange 2003 journaling configuration from Active Directory. This configuration tells the Exchange 2010 Hub Transport servers which Exchange 2003 mailbox databases have journaling enabled and also which journaling mailboxes they have sent the journal reports to. When a message is sent to a recipient on a journaled Exchange 2003 mailbox database from Exchange 2010, the Exchange 2010 Hub Transport server journals the message and sends a journal report to the journaling mailbox configured on the Exchange 2003 mailbox database."
Does this mean that even HT has no journal rule enabled and the exchange 2003 mailbox has journal enabled Exchange 2010 HT will journal the message and send the report to the journal mailbox?

"The routing group connector created by Exchange 2010 is configured to enable the X-EXCH50 BLOB to pass between Exchange 2010 servers and Exchange 2003 servers. If you create additional routing group connectors between the Exchange 2010 routing group and other Exchange 2003 routing groups, the connectors are also configured to enable the X-EXCH50 BLOB to pass between Exchange 2010 servers and Exchange 2003 servers.
Important:

You must use the New-RoutingGroupConnector cmdlet to create routing group connectors between Exchange 2010 servers and Exchange 2003 servers. The New-RoutingGroupConnector cmdlet configures the required permissions and defaults to enable communication between Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2003."

So if the RGC was created from Exchange 2003 ESM will it have the X-EXCH50 BLOB enabled?

"Although Exchange 2010 supports the X-EXCH50 BLOB, the Journaling agent doesn't read it when it evaluates a message that was received from an Exchange 2003 server. If a message matches an Exchange 2010 journal rule, a journal report is created, even if Exchange 2003 already journaled the message and sent a journal report to the same journaling mailbox."

Does this mean that in a mixed environment message from Ex2010 to 2003 can be avoided for journal twice but the message from ex2003 to 2010 WILL be journal twice if we want to journal all emails sent/receive for all ex2010 users. Is there a way to configure HT journal rule so a message from ex2003 and has been journal won’t get journalled again, even we want to sent/receive for all mailboxes?

Thanks

Journaling in mixed mode can be interesting depending on where your journaling to.

Are you journaling 2010 and 2003 to the same address/place?

Yes. We journal both exchange 2010 and 2003 into the same mailbox on a Exchange 2003 store.
