I'm currently running Exchange 2000 SP1 and have a problem receiving large emails.

Global Settings -> Message Delivery Properties -> Defaults -> Incoming Message Size is set to No Limit. Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties -> Messages -> Limit message size to (KB) is set to the maximum of 4000000. And the mailbox Delivery Restrictions are set to use the Default Limits and still nothing above about 3MB will come through. Is there another setting I'm missing somewhere? The only setting that is in affect is a 3MB limit on outgoing email.

Any help would be appreciated.

Some more information may be required before we can really talk about this
But can you make sure and check if you have applied any filters ? for restricint the same to any user
If yes then delete the filter and let the AD refresh see if this works
Good luck

one idea is whether your isp themselves have a limit since they have to store & forward...depending on your service agreement with them. We see quite alot of issues that can be / may be sorted out if one is able to see the network "handshaking" with the exchange server (and between the servers themselves). There is a wide variety of netmons and sniffers out there. The AppDancer.com free trial is easiest if decoding at the frame level is not your cup of tea.

This could also be caused by a recipient policy or if the user properties in AD Users and Computers has a special limit setting. I know most don't usually mess with these settings and they leave it set to use default but ya never know what people have tried.

Thanks for the replies.

Captial Server,
I'm not sure I follow you. What filter are you refering to?

The user properties in AD users and computers are all set to use the defaults.

The email is getting past our ISP. The sender receives a NDR from my Exchange server saying that the message can not be delivered to the intended recipient. The NDR shows a Status: 5.2.3 in the message. But I haven't been able to determine exactaly what that means. Any idea?

Also, just so you know. I can receive email from the same sender that was rejected as long as the message size is under 3MB. The only place I have a size restriction is on outgoing email...3MB limit. This problem just started when we upgraded to Exchange 2000 from 5.5.

I should probably add that the upgrade was not really an upgrade. I did a clean install and basically recreated everything from scratch.

First:

Numerical Code: 5.2.3
Possible Cause: Message is too large; the local quota is exceeded. For example, a remote Exchange user might have delivery restrictions set with max incoming message size.
Troubleshooting: Resend the message without attachments or set the server or the client side limit to allow a larger message size limit.

Second have you tried increasing the outgoing size limit just for testing and send a message larger than 3MB so see if that is what may be stopping them??

Thanks for the info Amy. I figured that's what it was. I had thought about increasing or removing the outgoing as well (just to see what happens)...but haven't tried changing that yet. I will do that and see what happens.

OK. I removed the size limit on outgoing email and now large emails come in fine. I have no idea why, but the outgoing limit seems to affect the incoming email as well. A bug maybe???
