We are having a strange intermittent problem on our Exchange 2000 server.  Sporaticly we will have mail stop delivering internally or deliver really slow.  You can open outlook and send messages, but they just wait in the outbox.  When it happened this morning I noticed that all of our SMTP server queue's had messages in them that were not being delivered.  A reboot of the server fixes the problem and then it will go along fine for anywhere from a few days to a month before the problem happens again.  The only thing that I can see going on at around the time is our backup.  We use backup exec with the exchange agent and have trend micro scanmail for exchange on the box.  I am thinking that the SMTP service is acting up, but all services appear to be running properly and our monitoring software says that the SMTP server is still up and running on the server.  Any ideas anyone has would be great.

Thanks

Rod

Not sure if this will help or not but since a reboot fixes it, why not consider scheduling a reboot every so-n-so many weeks? We had some odd problems with slow delivery that we were never quite able to track down. (Although, I suspect it was probably a problem with available memory. Do a search on the Exchange 2000 forum on the word 'memory' and see how many hits you get. ) Rebooting the server seemed to help in our case too. After I started rebooting the server every "Month-End" Sunday, we never saw the problem re-occur.
