hi,

I like to know  where the lost email are stored in exchange server 2000. The reason is we faced some database error after doing Background cleanup my exchange server generate event ID 1101. We noticed this problem after 12 hrs since it happened on sunday over the weekend. My exchange server queue strucked out with 300 emails and once we rebooted the system no one received any email which was held up in the queue , also  I search exchange server for the message and it was not in the database. How can I collect those email and forward it to the corresponding recipients.

Pls help me
siva

Where are lost messages stored? Depends on the state of the message.

1. If say a user deleted a message from deleted items, it could go to the dumpster if you configured deleted items retention. If not then the message is as good as gone. Theoreticaly the data exists as binary data in the database which is why you can the option to zero out the data during backups, but as far as Exchange is concerned it's unretrievable.

2. If the message was in the queue or the temp table and something happened and they do not appear in your queue folder then they are prob gone as well. No way to retrieve them.

3. Resort to a backup to retrieve messages if they were commited to the database at one point.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. We are using  outlook 2003 and using Microsoft Exchange option in outlook to connect to the server. So those emails are in the users send item , but didn't reach to the corresponding TO address person and also not in the database. When the problem was occuring I was mentioned that there was more than 300 emails in the  local routing connector. Once rebooted it seems to be disappeared. I can't understand how it is suddenly disappeared based on reboot.

Thanks,
siva
