Geographically dispersed CCR cluster, Exchange CMS called CMS001. There are 2 DCs in the Exchange Site, 1 in each physical location. The Primary is a Server 2008 DC, the Secondary is a 2003 DC. The Forest is 2003. . Primary site DC is specified as 1st DNS server on all servers. NO clients use Exchange DCs for DNS resolution. . Problem: The Secondary DNS server became unavailable for a few minutes. My users began complaining the their Outlook was Locking Up. Checked the DC, which I had unplugged from the network. Plugged it back in and the problem was resolved. . Can someone explain what happened?

We have 6 remote locations, each of which has at least 1 DC that is a GC (not counting the Exchange Site). Each physical location is a unique AD Site.

So the affected site was down to zero GCs available? What's your question then?

Not what I said. Said that each site has AT LEAST 1 GC. . The sites in question: Site 1 - 2 DCs, both are GC. Site 2 - 1 DC which is a GC. Neither of these were off-line (essentially, ALL dc's are gc's) The Secondary DC in the Exchange Site was off-line.

Additional Information: Event Log Warning: Source: MsExchangeMailSubmission EventID: 1009 . the MS Exchange Mail Submission Service is currently unable to contact any Hub Transport servers in the local Active Diretory Site. The servers may be too busy to accept new connections at this time. . Structure of network: Generating server in in Exchange AD Site, which has a 2008 DC, Physical Location 1. DC I took offline is in Exchange AD Site, which has a 2003 DC, Physical Location 2. . cluster CMS is currently owned by server in Physical Location 1.

Still not sure what your Exchange question is. You had an infrastructure failure in that the box your Exchange server needed to talk to was not there. If you had another box doing the same job you would have had a glitch as Exchange looked around for the next available server in its list. The clients have the same issue.

The DC that was taken off-line was the SECONDARY, not the primary. Exchange should not have even been using that DC at that time. There should not have been an infrastructure failure at all?
