Test Exchange 2k server installed on only dmain controler in domain. I am logged in as domain admin which was the account I used to install Exchange.

I get access denied when trying to open or view security for all username folders in M:\domainname\mbx\username

I used Exchange system Manager to confirm delegation of full exchange administration to the domain admin account for the Exchange organization.

Is my inability to access user's mailboxes correct behavior? I would think the administrator would be able to delete messages which are clogging up the system ect. If that is the case what changes can I make to allow the admin account access?

By default the administrator does not have access to view the contents of any mailbox except than his own. But you can add this feature by going to active directory users and computers (check that the advanced options is chosen) right click the user and choose properties. Go to the exchange advanced tab and to the mailbox permissions button. From there you can give full mailbox access to anyone you want, in your case the administrator.

Thanks for the reply! Any idea why I wouldn't have the advanced tab available? It seems like my only other option would be to have the user give administrator rights to the mailbox using through Outlook. Is there any other option?

There is a registry hack as well for displaying the security tab on objects that don't show it by default in ESM. Check out this article for more... Q259221 & 262054 Both these articles should help you get the permissions you need. good luck.

Hi Robert,
I have the same issue as Fattony. I have followed the steps that you outlined and still do not have access to the "username" folder. I noticed that there is an inherited "deny" on the "full mailbox access" in the permissions for Exchange Advanced settings. Thanks...

The deny box must be unchecked, deny supersedes apply.

Also, to see the advanced tabs, you need to go to the views menu and select "advanced" view.

Hi Robert,

I apologize for the direct email. It won't happen again.

Apparently, your directions worked. It seems like it takes awhile for the changes to take effect. I made the changes last Friday and was denied access. However, today(Monday) I am able to gain access to the folders...

Thanks for everyones help...

Johnny
