Hi,

I have an SBS2003 server; email seems to be working correctly, but in the event log I am getting 1000+ of the following errors per day:

Source: MSExchangeAL
ID: 8331
Message: The service threw an unexpected exception which was caught at f:\titanium\dsa\src\lra\abv_dg\lservagent.cpp(4511) For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

I have a feeling it is the recipient update service failing; but I am not sure. As I said, email seems to be working properly, but the server is slow.

Any suggestions?

We're having this same problem. It started on the 13th of February and the errors started hitting the log file heavily on the 18th. I'm not sure what we did on those days. They both could've been days we moved mailboxes from our Exchange 5.5 system.

I glad to hear I'm not the only one out there with this problem... [Frown]

Several weeks ago I rebooted the server, and the problem went away for about two weeks, then it came back again. I rebooted the server again yesterday which again has stopped the issue, but again I don't know how long for.

Users are complaining that the system is "slow" though I can't find anything in performance monitor which would indicate this... There are only 10 users on a Xeon 2.8 system with 2GB RAM and hardware RAID 1 Disk Array - shouldn't be slow.

&^$*^#@ servers with bizzare problems.

Cheers.

Yep, we just rebooted our server and the errors have gone away for now. I still don't know what the problem was.

We did have someone who was having problems getting emails to send out earlier today and I was wondering if it was related. We have a dual 2.8 Xeon but haven't noticed any slowness issues yet. But then again, not a lot is running on this server yet.

These errors just started again on our server on Friday at 6:30, which was after the entire I.T. department was gone. The error is coming up every minute.

Sorry to hear they're back [Frown]

I'm sure it's active directory related, but I can't explain why a reboot fixes it temporarily... I've had to reboot a few times over the last week or so; so the problem hasn't returned (yet). Do you run e-trust antivirus on the exchange server?

Cheers.

We have the same problem, but we didnt notice any slow in exchange server. We didnt reboot the server. Just restart the "Microsoft Exchange System Attendant" Service.

I have identical error message too!

My EXCH server works fine even event viewer records error periodically about every 60 sec.

In my case error starts when new user account is created!

Sample:
1. Create new user
2. User shows in AD but mailbox does not been created (error message starts to be written in Event viewer)
3. You must delete created user becouse user's mailbox never will be created!
4. Restart server or AI service
5. Create user again

That's it but I still don't know why this issue starts?!

Microsoft has just made a HotFix for this error, the fix number is 837444, so call Microsoft Product Support Services and refer to 837444 and you will be provided with a URL in order to download it.

Please note that this fix is scheduled to be included in Exchange 2003 service pack 1 if you prefer to wait for the service pack release.

This should fix the 8331 MSExchangeAL events on Exchange 2003 multi-processor servers or single processors with hyperthreading.

NB: Information comes directly from MS.

Thank you Henrik,

Just realised what makes my server different from several others I maintain... It's is a Dual Xeon 2.8 system - that'll be that multi-processor...

I'll apply the hot fix and see how we go...

Thanks again.

Does the hotfix just surpress the event log error or does it fix what causes the error? Everything seems to be working ok with exchange..only thing I haven't done yet was to add a new domain user..

Also..does it require users to be out of email or an Exchange server reboot?

Article 837444 seems to have been removed from the Microsoft Knowledge base. I wonder what problms the hot fix causes. [Frown]

FYI

The KB article for the HotFix hasn't be written yet.

Send me a private message if you are interested in the HotFix.

I called Microsoft product support for IT Professionals, referenced the article number, and they issued the URL for the download immediately.

What's the phone number?

The only number I've found is Customer Support, which costs $99 for an incident... And the web site won't accept our Product ID for the free support.

We're also running a dual Xeon server.

I just called and had them send me the URL, I applied it on a clients server that was throwing ~1600 errors each day for the last week, haven't seen any errors since. If you're not experiencing the problems yet, wait till the hot fix is 100% tested and released.
