Hi altaf!

Why is your drive getting full? If the MDBDATA folder in the Exchange installation path is filled with log files it's about time to learn how to backup your server! For info on that check: http://forums.msexchange.org/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=002041.

If you simply run out of space because the database holding mailboxes and public folders is getting large it would be an idea to add more disk capacity. You can easily change the location of log and/or database files by checking the properties for the Storage Group itself and/or the individual stores. Search the forum for more information if you need that.

NB! Some antivirus applications have been known to create trouble if they are configured to scan the Exchange M: drive. Apareantly log files etc tend to be duplicated and increase in size. I can't tell you exactly what happens as I'm not too keen to install a AV application just to find out! [Smile] Anyhow, make sure (if you have AV running) that the M: drive isn't scanned.

So check this out and keep us updated!

Regards,

Johan

Hi again!

You must use Exchange aware backup software! Only then will Exchange flush the old log files. It isn't enough to just make a backup of the log files with any software. Veritas Backup has a special agent for Exchange which will do the trick. Otherwise use the ntbackup utility ON THE EXCHANGE SERVER. That version of ntbackup is Exchange aware and will do the job correctly. You could make a backup to disk with the ntbackup utility and then later back up that file on whatever media you use with Veritas.

Regards,

Johan

Hi Johan,

Thanks for the Reply

I do backup the Exchnage server with Exchnage module from Veritas. I also tried doing full Backup using NTBackup utility (ver 5.0.2195.2552). For some reason my backup failed. Is they a way I can remove the logs manually?

How do you run the backup? The user running the backup must be a member of the backup group on the server. Do you get any errors in the ntbackup log?

If you want you can temporarily enable "Circular logging", which means that the number of log files is greatly reduced at the price of much lower data safety - if something should happen to your store (e.g. disk failure) it can be quite hard to recover from that! Circular logging is enabled at First Storage Group->Properties->General tab->Enable circular logging.

You can delete the log files if you have to. The best thing though is to get a full backup running scheduled on your server. Without the log files you are facing great trouble should the database stores get corrupted.
