Hi, I have inherited an single Exchange 2003 server on a VM. I'm a bit of an Exchange novice but the setup looks ok to me but I am unable to send mail to any user on that server ( so it's obviously not ok! ). I don't get any ndr, you can see messages in the Event Viewer that an ndr is generated but it is never recieved - probably for the same reason as the original mail! DNS lookups etc look ok and I'm pick the recipient up straight from the GAL. Any ideas most welcome.

Hi, are you testing from the outside to inside or inside to inside? Regards, Paulo Oliveira.

Use Message Tracking to see what is happening to the messages and to the NDRs. Do the sender and recipient have mailboxes on the same server? What Event ID is being generated?

I see nothing in Message Tracking at all. I get 'The tracking database on adexchange.adexchango is not available or the message has left the Exchange organization' The Event ID generated is 3008. It is a single server environment. Sender and Recipient have mailboxes on the same server. Thanks!

Sounds like you're smarthosting everything or you haven't properly configured your Recipient Policy. An inside-to-inside message should not leave the server as Message Tracking indicates. Is this a new installation, or had it been working previously?

I dont know if this has ever worked it's a VM image given to me by a colleague who has only ever used it for testing a SSO product so has never tried to send email. further update: I have uninstalled Exchange and re-installed - just accepted all the defaults. when I try to send email now I get the NDR delivered to the sender. I dont think I am smarthosting anything - how can I check? Have made no changes to the default recipient policy. thanks.

I dont think I am smarthosting anything - how can I check? There are two places to check. First, in the ESM, expand your server, Protocols, SMTP, and open the properties of the Default SMTP Virtual Server. Go to the Delivery tab and click on Advanced. If there is anything in the Smart host field, that is where all outbound messages will be sent. Second, there is a setting in your SMTP connector configuration. On the General tab there is a radio button choice of either using DNS or smart host. quote:
Have made no changes to the default recipient policy. Did you add the SMTP domain used by your internal addresses? Have you made Exchange authoritative (responsible for all mail delivery to this address)? What does the NDR say?
