Mail held in queue after mailbox move - 23.Aug.2005 11:20:00 PM

This is probably an easy one, but I'm new to exchange and don't know where to look.

I recently added a second exchange 2003 sp1 server. I successfully moved a few mailboxes from server 1 to server2 and can log into the accounts just fine. The servers are on the same domain, same subnet, same routing group. All mail comes in through server1, but it is not getting routed to server2 for those mailboxes. It just sits in the server2.domain.local smtp queue. I tried the "force connection" option, but to no avail. I really need to get this going soon, so any help would be greatly appreciated. What am I missing?

Check you Fully-Qualified domain name (FQDN) on the Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties.

The FQDN can be found under Severs -> Server name -> Protocols -> SMTP

Then right click on Default SMTP Virtual Servers
Click on the Delivery tab
Click advanced...
Your FQDN should be the name on you local domain.
Example: exchange-S2.youdomain.local

Thanks for the replies. I check the FQDN and it checks out ok. I also tried the telnet test email. I'm able to log into the server fine, and send the mail, but it just sits in the queue and never goes anywhere.

Thanks

I have the same problem. Moved accounts can send mails to anywhere but cannot receive. Looks like the SRV1 cannot route the mails to the second server.

We had the exactly the same problem. Our server uses a smarthost to deliver internet mail.
We set a connector for this purpose. The error was that we replicated the smarthost in the SMT virtual server in the old server:

           ESM -> First Administrative Group->old server name->protocols-SMTP
Right click on default virtual server and choose the tab Delivery and press the button advanced.
We cleared the field smarthost and the mail began to flow between the two servers and the replication of public folders took place.

I hope that can help you.

Ok all, The mail flow between the servers works like this.  Mail comes from the firewall to the first server and goes to ..\Exchsrver\MailRoot\Vsi1\Pickup   folder then goes to the Queue folder.  If it is bound for that server exchange picks it up and moves it to the mail box if not it should rout it the second server.  that server has the same folders.  When you say it is being held up please check the folders and see which folder it is building up in.  A good way to test out whats going on is stop IIS admin and SMTP services on the second server.  open command prompt and type "iisreset /stop"  this will stop iis and all dependancies.  Then go to the ..\Exchsrver\MailRoot\Vsi1\ folder and rename the queue folder to queue2 and create a new queue folder then start the servcies back up iisreset /start  (good idea to check servcies that are set to automatic, and that they all came back up in the servcies snap in).
This will clean out the mail without lossing it (mail in queue2 can be moved into the Pickup and it will reprocess after issue is resolved).  Then open outlook express and set it up for your account that is on that server.  and create a new email that is addressed to that same user, then save the email on the desktop.  Then copy the email and paste it into the ..\Exchsrver\MailRoot\Vsi1\Pickup   folder on that server, it should move from the pickup to the queue then to the user.  if this doesn't happen then we know that it is just and issue on that server.  Test this out and let us know what is going on.

The fact that you can telnet and the mail lands in the queue then you know that mail can be passed as it would have been rejected and built up on the Server1 side if it was a permissions/ smtp smart host/ relaying issue between the servers

Also you might want to make sure that there is no AV or Backup software scaning either of theses MailRoot folders on both servers as it is not advised by Microsoft to do so. For testing purposes make sure that if you have any email scaning software to temp disable them while testing.
