Is it possible to limit the items in a user's mailbox? I have many users that have over 40,000 items in their mailboxes.

No, not even in a client-side Outlook GPO. There is, of course, the application of Mr 2 by 4 upside the user's head.

You could limit their mailbox size, which would in essence force them to remove some of their 40,000+ emails. Kezzran

Thanks for the answers. Is there some reason why they wouldn't let you limit the items? I mean, even if you can limit the size of the mailbox, many of my users have tons of small emails.

To limit on number of items in a folder would require Exchange to have knowledge of the item count on every folder in the store. The overhead would be immense. Immediately multiply the amount of information needs to keep track of by 10 or 12 times. Simon.

It's just never been a feature. Mailbox sizes can cause problems when they overflow the Mailbox Store limit (Exchange Standard) or when they overflow the physical disk. A large number of items can make things slow and inconvenient for a user, but doesn't cause the same level of criticality (i.e. crashing the server).

Honestly, speaking i pray that such a feature never appears on Exchange since keeping in mind how much load store.exe would have to take just to bear in mind as to what are individual item limits. Since, we need to understand the items are not ONLY found in our inbox - it constitutes each item found under calendar / drafts/ deleted items / sent items / dumpster. So, if for an eq we have an Exchange Server having about 50GB of DB having over 5 million items in total and roughly 1200 mailboxes within it. Now, the store.exe would have to keep a track of 1) Each message leaving the store for message limit 2) Messages going out and coming within needs to be within the user / store limits. 3) Delegates / permissions of each user. 4) Store size and white spaces as per online maintenance. 5) Keep track of mailbox size limits along with store. And now if they introduce item limit count - wow i would pray for the store.exe not to crash ever :)
