We've got a number of Exchange 2003 servers littered across different sites that we are planning to consolidate into our main data centres. Unfortunately many sites do not currently have mailbox restrictions and we have some (extremely) large mailboxes as a result. I'm therefore devising a mailbox restriction that we will enforce prior to consolidating. Is there a limit on the size of mailbox that can be moved between Exchange 2003 and 2007? I've found a number of sites where people have experienced issues moving larger mailboxes, but haven't been able to find anything concrete concerning a limit. Also (and apologies that this is similar to another post here this morning), does anyone know of any good documentation on throughput when moving a mailbox? I'm very aware it will depend on the size of the mailbox, number and types of messages, network bandwidth and everything else. We will be performing our own measurements, but I'd just like to see what other people have experienced and understand what we can expect.

Exchange 2007 doesn't have a limit that I found as far as the size was concerned for moving it onto a 2007 server. However, once you GET them over there, you will find that if they are over... 3gig? 1.9gig?? I think, they will not be allowed to send/receive at all. which I found out on Saturday morning after moving all my mailboxes. I had 4 users with over 1.5 gig and 2 users over 2.5 gigs. those users took the longest to move... and one of them was denied access afterwards. I have just under 40 active mailboxes that I moved from a 2003 server to a 2007 server. They were on a gig switch sitting on top of each other and it took me about 6-8 solid hours to move about 18gigs worth of mailboxes. sitting on a gig switch next to each other really helped, but the exchange server would only move them a couple at a time, so it took a bit longer.

Joeya, Thanks for the response. In Exchange 2007, my understanding is that the default mailbox restriction is 2GB. Is this the limit you are referring to? Exchange 2007 Store Related Changes and Improvements As expected, it sounds as though moving large mailboxes across the WAN is going to be horribly slow. If anyone else has any real world experience of this, the feedback would be much appreciated.
