The Mailbox Store logon shows several users with 30-40 logins. Eventually I get the Event ID 9646 message Mapi session exceeded the maximum number of objects of type session. The only to clear the login is to dismount and remount the Mailbox Store. Does anyone know a solution to this? This is an old Exchange 2K3 that has been in operation for many years now and this problem just surfaced.

Have you recently implemented some kind of application that creates alot of connections? Perhaps some sort of Mailbox indexer like xobni?

Nothing has been rolled out other than those through MS Microsoft Update

Do you have Windows Server 2003 SP2 installed? If so, have you also installed; An update to turn off default SNP features is available for Windows Server 2003-based and Small Business Server 2003-based computers

It's an important update disabling the Chimney function in SP2.

It seems that Exchange does not close out the session.

I've seen network issues cause this.  Outlook is very sensitive to interruption.  It could be that intermittent network drops are causing sessions to disconnect but stay open.  Then it opens a new connection.  If that happens enough, you exceed the maximum and the connection is refused (at which time Outlook reports it is not connected).

I've had success in terminating the sessions by initiating the Mailbox Move wizard for an individual mailbox.  The first thing it does is disconnects all the sessions.  As soon as that happens, you can terminate the wizard.  That way you don't have to take an entire store offline.

I have been using that option (Move) to reset the connection but it's still a band-aid fix. I wonder, though, if the communication problem is somehow related to the server itself instead of at the hardware level (cabling, switches, routers). Occationally, the server's duty cycle would peak for extended period of time. My question is during that "non-responsive" periods, does Outlook disconnects and reconnects with a different connection ID?

Yes, that update was installed to disable that feature.

My workstations run Symantec Endpoint Protection and I noticed that with Network protection enabled, ping to the e-mail server (the first packet) took 43ms. Subsequent packets took 11ms on a 100Mbps network. With it disabled, the time each took was <1ms.

That could do it, not the network latency in itself, but if its causing dropped packets between Outlook and Exchange the MAPI sessions don't seem to reset and end up going above the 32 limit.

I have a site at the moment and for whatever reason its WAN link drops about 6 packets every minute or so, regular as clockwork, its a joint site between us and another company so our network guys blame them, they blame us - you get the picture.

Every user on that site gets an Event 9646 every single day, i've had to temporarily grant them all the View Information Store permission so they can exceed the 32 session limit, otherwise they spend half the day disconnected from e-mail.

I find TCPView is a useful tool for disconnecting mapi sessions if its just the odd user.

ARGH! I finally discovered a nexus. After I posted my last I went to one of the workstations and tested out a theory of why network latency is so bad. Symantec Endpoint protection v11.0.4202.75 running in Managed mode and in particular the Network Threat Protection. It is interfering somehow. I disabled it on one workstation (farthest from the switches) and saw the latency time dropped from 43ms to <1ms. So I decided to expand the test subjects and disabled only the Network Threat Protection for all of the WS and this morning the logon list is clean as a whistle. Now most of my users maintain 3 connections while a few have 4. Nothing like yesterday.

So, I have another question. Am I experiencing an infection of malware that is doing this? I've been running full scan on all workstations and servers every day for the last 2 weeks and found nothing of significant.

Really great to hear you found the problem source. Even greater to hear it wasn't Exchange.

But I think your last question is out of scope for an Exchange dedicated forum though.

Is there a setting or settings within exchange that control the login/time-out of connections to the mailstore?

I think i've disconvered the source of my vexing problem. We have 2 Internet connections (T1 & DSL). The T1 hosts our SMTP & VPM traffic while the DSL hosts general web browsing. In order to support an iPad who wanted to login from the Internet, I placed the Exchange server on the other side of the DMZ. It seemed, Outlook, running internally, decuded to go out to the Internet via the 2nd Internet connection (DSL) to login to the server (T1). That caused all the problems. I still ahve to discover the mechanics behind that process but by putting it back to this side of the DMZ, the disconnections and excessive sessions disappeared.

I would never recommend putting any Exchange server FE or BE in the DMZ, no domain member should ever be directly exposed to the Internet, in my opinion, of course.

Absolutely agree 100%. It's wrong to have any Exchange Server (except Exchange 2007/2010 Edge Trasnsport) in any DMZ that is directly connected to the Internet.

It's an accident waiting to happen.

Jesper & Omni, I don't disagree at all. However, it was a quick and dirty fix to allow 1 iPad user (you can almost guess at the significant nature of this user who just got an iPad from his kids for his birthday) to login and use the e-mail feature of the iPad.

Does anyone know of a safe way to support an iPad (login from the Internet) to access Exchange eMail and Calendar?

Never used an iPad, guessing its the same e-mail app as the iPod touch? Can they not just use active sync?  All you need is to put in the OWA address and their AD credentials.

There was no mentioning of ActiveSync from Apple. If you know of it please let me know.

Like I say not used the iPad, but on my iPod touch (which unfortunately I don't have with me right now so can't send you an exact list of steps) you go into the e-mail app, it asks you what kind of account you want to add and you select Microsoft Exchange, then you just put in the server address (OWA address) username and password and then select if you want SSL or not, then it pulls down the mail just like a Windows SmartPhone does using activesync.
