I have an SBS 2000 server that is running Exchange. I just bought two new 2003 servers and a copy of Exchange 2003 Enterprise. I want to move away from SBS.

I think I just learned that I can add my new Exchange 2003 to the existing site and move mailboxes. I think I am going to have to use Exmerge.

Anybody have any ideas on how I should approach this migration. Has anyone worked this scenario before?

I had to call Microsoft. This is the process they gave me:

HOW TO: Migrate from SBS 2000 to Enterprise Version of Windows 2003 Server with Exchange on New Hardware.

1. Export all user mailboxes on SBS 2000 using Exmerge into .pst files

a. Take a note of Organization name and First Administrative Group name.

2. Make sure that we have got Service Pack 2 or above on SBS 2000 for Windows.

3. Run ADPREP with following switches on SBS 2000 in order to prepare it for 2003

server.

(ADPREP is available in CD for windows 2003 "I386 folder", we need to run this tool

directly from CD.

a. Run <Drive letter for CD-ROM>\I386\ADPREP /ForestPrep at Command Prompt.

b. Run <Drive letter for CD-ROM>\I386\ADPREP /DomainPrep at Command Prompt.

4. Install 2003 Server on New Hardware.

a. Do DCPROMO Up and make it a Additional Domain Controller.

b. Now Make 2003 Server as a Primary Domain Controller.

Two ways to Make 2003 server as a Primary Domain Controller.

Option 1

(i) Use NTDSUTIL and Transfer all FSMO roles to 2003 server.

(ii) Do a DCPROMO Down on SBS 2000.

OR

Option 2

(i) Disconnect or Unplug the Network Cable From SBS 2000.

(ii) Use NTDSUTIL and Seize All FSMO Roles.

What they didn't tell me though was that you have to uninstall exchange from the SBS server also. This has to be done right before you install Exchange 2003 on the new server. Also you are probably going to have to use adsiedit to remove the old exchange organization information from the active directory.

Hope this all helps.

Has anyone succesfully used this procedure to migrate from SBS 2000 to Windows Standard Server 2003 and Exchange standard 2003? I got a different solution from Microsoft, basically setup a new Domain and Migrate Exchange using Exmerge. The whole domain prep and upgrade process appears to be very complicated and a lot appears to be able to go wrong.

Any comments would be greatly apreciated

I used the method that I posted above. It didn't go too badly. As I mention at the end there are a few steps that they missed such as uninstalling exchange on the sbs server and using ADSIedit to remove the exchange info from the AD.

The idea of building a new domain and re-creating all of those user accounts and permissions seems like a beating to me. Depends on howmany user account you have I guess.

When I did this job I had just inherited this environment and due to hardware failures I didn't have much time to understand it, so creating a new domain would have been a nightmare for me.

It is a good two months since I did this job and everything is running well and the client is very happy.

Thanks Chris.

In fact this is pretty simple at my site at the moment. There hasn't been much configuration of the SBS Server on this network and there are only 45 accounts, with not much config on their system so rather than risk it and get any old bad config I have decided to use exmerge on Exchange and migrate to a new Domain. A bit painful maybe but don't really want to risk it.

Have found a heap of articles and got microsoft support as well.

See below if anyone would like details

Trying to contact Chris Good!

Chris, I attempted the process you outlined in this pst and I was great until I got to the portion where I attempted to install/move my exchange server. and all went wrong. I guess I messed something there. All was fin until step 8. and I could not import my users mailboxes.

Now this morning that I have had time to reflect on it, it looks like my main store (According the DNS) on the old SBS was MainBranch and the NEW Exchange was called First Storage group. Well I may have got my steps mixed up because I use Option 1 and used NTDSUTIL to transfer all the FSMO roles to the new DC. (old DC SCFCU1, new DC SCFCU-DC01). Then I demoted the SCFCU1 server. I need to leave it connected because I use that server for Symancte Internet Security and NAV server as well as several other services. Well On the the DC (SCFCU-DC01) all the users showed up, however it though there were mailboxes already connected, to SCFCU1 still! I could not delete and re-create the mailboxes, or transfer then with Exmerge.

I assumed that I did not properly execute the step you mention that MS forgot to mention ADSIEDIT, because I uninstalled Exchange off the SCFCU1 server first then I could not properly run ADSIEDIT.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Also For my next attempt I though about doing this:

1. Re-setup the new server (SCFCU-DC01), make it a domain member (as I did to begin with in the previous attempt)
2. Move my other critical systems over to the new server:
a: Profile Maker
b: Norton Antivirus Server / Symantec Mail Security for Exchange
c: Some odds and end SQL stuff/server
d: File shares (\\public, \\share, etc) Move to new domain member.
e: Do away with ISA server, implement Squid on my centos server (Linux)

This will leave only DC and Exchange on the SCFCU1 server. Then?

3. install exchange on the SCFCU-DC01 server, and use the Exchange migration function to move all the exchange mailboxes to the new exchange server. Then UN-INSTALL the old SBS Exchange Server. Then once that is all functioning then promote the new SCFCU-DC01 server and then demote the old SCFCU1 server.

4. Then I can re-format the SCFCU1 server to 2003, and perform the same tasks again, to make the SCFCU1 server ONLY the exchange server and move the mailboxes back again ;-)

Ultimately my goal is to make SCFCU-DC01 the domain controller/File server and the SCFCU1 server the Exchange server.

SCFCU1 - Currently SBS 2000 running Exchange / ISA / DC / Window Washer / Pain in the you know what server ;-)
SCFCU-DC01 - Currently a Domain Member

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Carl

Yeah I think the ADSIEDIT step is critical. I beleive you have to install the tools off of the windows cd in order to run ADSIEDIT. If you don't do this step then all of the old exchange info is still in active directory and your new exchange server will just pick all of that crap up.

Is it critical that you move away from SBS? If not, you could have just done an upgrade to SBS 2003 and you could have avoided all of this crap.

The problem with your second idea is that you can't use the move mailbox function with SBS because you can never add a second mail server to an SBS domain. You will have to get riid of SBS if you want to do that.

If the upgrade is not an option, then I think you have to get ADSIedit working and get rid of the old exchange info in the AD to get any further.

problem is I can not find any good instructions for ADSIEdit because I was completely lost .

I did install the utilites on the 2000 server and it was there, but since i demoted the server it said it could not find any active directory hosts....

That makes sense because the demoted server no longer has a copy of the AD on it. You should be able to run ADSIedit on the new server.

This link talks about doign the migration but on a diff Domain altogether, that is no what you did?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555073

Also step
quote:
1. Export all user mailboxes on SBS 2000 using Exmerge into .pst files

a. Take a note of Organization name and First Administrative Group name

When I installed Exchange I do not think it asked me what Orginazation to use, maybe I should use Custom Install?

And can you leave the SBS online (file shares and such) after you uninstall Exhcnage from it?

And you want to remove Exchange before demoting the server, then run ADSIEdit, then Demote the server?

Sorry for bugging you so much, BUT I think maybe I can reserect this server (NEW server) if I uninstall the Exchange server on the new DC, then use the ADSIEdit to remove the exchange stuff, then re-install Exchange?

However i have ADSIEdit up on the new server, so what do i remove, just the entries that say Exchange ?

I don'thave a lot oftime to help you with this, but if I recall you want to delte the subkey directly underneath, CONFIGURATION > SERVICES > MICROSOFT EXCHANGE. Don't delete the microsoft exchange key, but the subkey below that.

I would strongly suggest you backup your AD first though.
