I am currently researching migrating our E2K server to a more powerful server hardware platform. I am curious as to the best way to do this. I was thinking that I could bring up another server in the same site and use a connector between the two to migrate the data, however which connector should I use if any? The ADC (E2k SP3 version)? The MSmail connector? Or am I stuck having to use exmerge? Any information would be greatly appreciated. "[Confused]"

Maybe I missed something, but why don't you just stand-up the second exchange server in the same site and then move all your user accounts to the new server.

Make sure you move public folders and recipient update services also before you remove the first server.

Once you are sure everything is moved, simply uninstall exchange on the original server.

Well I wanted to be able to "replicate" the old servers Private and Public store data to the new server, have them co-exist, and when we are ready, bring down the old server. Doing the "move" as you suggested would require a one step process where we would need to take our Exchange 2000 server down for an entire day/weekend. I was looking to do something of a smoother transition from Server A to Server B. Any suggestions?

The only downtime you will experience with moving the users is during the time it takes to move that user account. When I did it, I moved a group of accounts each night. When the moved users started outlook again, thier profile was remapped and they had no idea that thier account had been moved. Work very smooth for me.

The other services such as recipient update and public folders will have no user impact when moved. Just replicate the public folders to the new server first and then remove the instance on the old server once you verify the data is moved.

This can all be accomplished over a short period of time while both servers are up and running.

Hi Guys,

I have to complete the same project in a few weeks. I have only one exchange srever (one organization, single site)
If I bring up another exchange srever (2003), is there any problem removing the first exhange server from organization (and site) later ?

thanks,

Mili

To avoide naming conflicts and Client access issues have you looked at performing Exchange Distaster recovery onto the new hardware. Its clean and you always have the old server to fall back to as a back out plan.

Just a thought

Just wondering if the guys here wanting the info did the move yet? Our organization has 1 Win2k PDC, 1 Win2k BDC and 1 Win2k Exchange 2003 server. I want to move Exchange to another computer but want the simplest way out that pretty much proven. So is it as easy as just bringing up another Exchange 2003 server and moving the mailboxes over to the new server? Thanks!
