I'm currently migrating our environment from an Exch2k single server to an Exch 2k3 cluster, everything has gone worryingly too well so far and we've hit the first hiccup. After replicating all the Public and System Folders for a week or so, I then removed the old Exch2k server as the replica for the PF's and gave it a further few days and everything was working fine. I then migrated the user mailboxes and finally went through every System Folder and removed the old server as a replica. On dismounting the old PF store a few things started to go wrong. Internally mail delivery to the PF's has been fine, but externally mail to those PF's has been bounced. The minute I remount the old PF store everything is fine. I'm waiting for Messagelabs to confirm all the mail route addresses they have for us, but is there likely to be something I've missed on Exchange that could be causing this? Thanks in advance JC

Are you sure everythings replicated over? Let's test, create a new pf on the NEW server. Make sure you give anonymous contributer rights then try sending to it from the internet after you dismount the first server. If it doesn't work post the ndr.

Also read this article, it goes over how pfs are received from the Internet when you have multiple pf servers. Why on earth did my email to a public folder go there? http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/09/10/228114.aspx

OK, I created a new PF on the new server only with the PF store mounted on both new and old servers. Internal and external mail works fine. I then dismounted the PF store on the old server and internal mail worked fine. However, external mail sat queued on the old server until I mounted the old PF store again. I sense that I'm missing something obvious here, but PF's have always been something I never quite got my head around! Thanks

Can you verify in adsiedit if this attribute msExchOwningPFTreeBL shows your new server on the top of the list? 1Open ADSIEDIT, Go to configuration container, services, microsoft exchange, org name, admin groups, first admin group, highlight folder heirarchies. 2. In right pane, high light properties of CN=public folder. Search for msexchowningpftreebl. Double click the attribute. You should see your old and new server there. Which shows up first on the list? Preferably it should be your new one. Also whats the ndr message you get when an external user tries to send to a pf when the old server's pf is dismounted, can you post?

One other thing, are you using routing connectors between the two ex servers?

OK, msExchOwningPFTreeBL shows the new server first and the old one second. Both machines are in the same Routing Group with the new one as the Master. With regard to NDR's none of the affected people externally have sent me one, although I have seen a delayed delivery notice that went out to one. They are the same messages that you'd get if mail was stuck in a queue unable to be delivered. Bearing in mind that the old server is Exch2k SP3 and the new one Exch2k3 SP2, would the Move All Replicas command from the context menu work (assuming I replicated all data between old and new again)? Thanks

Problem solved! I didn't spot the obvious - our mailroute lists the old Exchange server above the new one. So I dropped the old PF store and dropped the server and mail flowed quite happily into the organisation from external sources. On bringing the old server back up, with the PF store still dismounted everything is still working fine.

Hi JC, I have exactly the same problem with the external mail not being delivered to the PF. I also migrated from Exchange 2000 to Ex2k3. What did you exactly meant with mail route ? Any idea where to check ? I also followed all migration rules, but noticed this bug after decommisioning (and formatting) the old server .. Any info for me ? BR, Ronald Top

Topski, we use a third party to pre-filter all of our mail before delivering it to our internal servers. They use specific IP addresses to deliver mail to us and during the migration this gave us the luxury of a primary and secondary mail route. So quite simply they continued sending mail to our old server as it was the primary route and still live. As soon as I changed this the isse was resolved.

Hmmm. Have you tried tracking any of the test messages as they've come in? I assume private mail delivery is as per normal? JC
