First post, so please let me know if I mess up in any way:
Reinstalling Exchange 2000, due to: 1. Corrupt Priv.edb 2. System Attendant wouldn't start & therefore Information Store wouldn't start.
So I uninstalled Exchange to the best of my ability using KB articles, and when reinstalling, I get:
Setup failed while installing sub-component Miscellaneous Atom with error code 0x103798A
The error part of the Exchange Server Process.log is below: Any suggestions?
[08:21:32] ***** RETRYING THE FAILED OPERATION ***** [08:21:32] Beginning Reinstall of Miscellaneous Atom sub-component [08:21:32] Entering CBaseServiceAtom(Miscellaneous Atom)::ScReinstall [08:21:32] Entering CBaseServiceAtom(Miscellaneous Atom)::ScCreateAtomServices [08:21:32] Leaving CBaseServiceAtom(Miscellaneous Atom)::ScCreateAtomServices [08:21:32] Entering CBaseAtom(Miscellaneous Atom)::ScReinstall [08:21:32] Entering CBaseAtom(Miscellaneous Atom)::ScRefreshRegistryKeys [08:21:32] Configuring registry entries for Miscellaneous Atom [08:21:32] Entering CRegistryManager::ScProcessFile [08:21:32] ++++ Starting interpreter on file d:\setup\i386\exchange\Misc.ins ++++ [08:21:32] Interpreting line <CreateProcess:C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin;regsvr32 /s cdowf.dll;60000> [08:21:32] Process created ... waiting (60000) [08:21:32] Process has exited with 00000000 [08:21:32] Interpreting line <CreateProcess:C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin;regsvr32 /s cdowfevt.dll;60000> [08:21:32] Process created ... waiting (60000) [08:21:32] Process has exited with 0x000005 [08:21:32] The command

I hate to say this, but if your Priv.edb is corrupt, then a reinstall of Exchange probably won't fix your problem.
Did you try running any of the Exchange DB utilities (eseutil, isinteg) to see if you could find anything?
Could you not mount the Information Store at all?
In addition, to reinstall Exchange, you don't need to uninstall it first. If you start the Exchange 2000 setup on a server already running Exchange 2000, one of the options is to "Reinstall."
As far as the installation errors go, make sure that the user account you are using to install Exchange is a member of the Enterprise Admins group and the Schema Admins group.
A few steps from here to try:
Try running ESEUTIL /g on your priv.edb. That will tell you of any integrity issues.
Try building another server, copying your priv.edb over there, and then running SP3.
Let us know what happens.

Thanks for the reply.
OK, first, I copied the priv.edb to another machine and ran Ontrack's PowerControls to extract the messages to a .pst file. There was only 1 person with his data on the server. The rest use .pst's.
I did try to use the Reinstall option, but I get errors whatever I try to do. Not always the Miscellaneous Atom error, but it never successfully completes.
I tried removing the .edb & .log files out of the mdbdata directory to start the IS service, but it wouldn't start no matter what.
What I'm thinking at this point is to remove the Exchange organization from the DC (the machine running exchange now) and install a new machine with a different name & everything, install Exchange, and mount the existing pub.edb and just create a new priv.edb. Then the user can move the data from his .pst to the new mailbox on the new Exchange box.
Is there anything I should know about going that route, or should I do something else instead?
PS: I did run eseutil on the priv.edb and it came back with checksum errors and wouldn't repair it. But I don't know if that's related to the original problem of the System Attendant not starting & the IS service not starting because of the SA service.
