Hello everyone, First time poster, definitely won't be my last. I have this issue where 4 users are missing email from this past weekend. They said that they saw the emails on their Blackberrys, but the emails are not in OWA or Outlook. They all claim to not have deleted it from their devices. Also the mail is configured to stay on the server. I looked in the message tracking center and queried the weekend and each user has a bunch of email. We are using Exchange 2003 Enterprise and the users are on Outlook 2007. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance, Pelton

Rule number one. Users lie. If message tracking shows the messages were delivered to their mailbox then something has happened to it client side. Rules, views, something like that. Have you checked deleted item retention? Are you using a BES or some other method of supporting the Blackberry devices? Simon.

Thank you Simon for your reply, LOL Yes users do lie, I just found it odd that it happened to 4 people this time. We don't have BES in this location, however one of the affected users does connect through BES from the home office. I've had 2 users run a search against all of their mail items and they've come up with nothing. The deleted item retention is set for 7 days and unfortunately nothing is in there either. Can you think of any other phenomenon that might have caused this? Again your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pelton

Deleted Item retention isn't 100% - it is possible for content to be removed from the mailbox in a certain way without leaving a trace. If all the users affected are Blackberry users then that would tend to point to the cause being there. If the email is being collected with POP3, then email removal is possible in error - as POP3 isn't really designed to leave email on the server - although it can. If it was database corruption then I would expect it to be more widespread. If no one else has reported issues then it points the finger at the handheld devices. Simon.

We chalked it up to gremlins. The users said that the emails weren't on their blackberry's anymore and they insist they didn't delete them. So now we make sure to get 7 days of email backup.
