I currently have Exchange 2003 and DC running on the same machine with up to 30 users. but I am thinking to build a new infrastucture in a way to have DC and Exchange 2003 run on seperate machines. and also want to recover the mailboxes and the public folder as well from the old server. does anyone know how to do this? thanks!

Thanks for your reply!, but what I am trying to achieve here is to have a DC on separate machine. So how could that benefit from that link you posted to me?

I have 2 servers, one will be a DC and the second is the new Exchange 2003 which will replace the old one.

so u have 2 spare servers which includes the present exchange and DC. Then install one of the server as an additional domain controller. move the operations master role to the new server. Promote the new server as a GC. by default it isnt a gc.wait for the replication to complete. Check the event logs if you see any errors. install exchange on the new server. move mailboxes from old server to the new server. Replicate public folders from the old to the new. replicate system folders, organisational forms, Free/busy, offline address list to the new server point the RUS to the new dc , OAB generation to the new exchange server. Check the functionality of exchange that all is working fine. Specially mailbox access, public folder access, OAB, Free/busy info. Transfer the schema master and domain master role to the new server. once replicated shut down the old dc and check the functionality of the old dc and new exchange for sometime (i would say 30 days).

If I move the operations master role to the new server. Promote the new server as a GC then install exchange 2003 on the new server. Can I test the exchange 2003 for at least 30 days for full functionality? would the old exchange be afftected at this state? Thank you Lancy!

The best way is to test your new DC is - first tranfer all roles to the new DC. When the new server is an additional domain controller it will have a copy of Active directory. make sure your DNS on New DC works properly and it should not be pointed to the old DC once shut down. once the roles are transferred, shut down the main DC. dont sieze any of the roles on the old dc. you are installing exchange on a new exchange server with a different name. install exchange when the old dc is running and transfer mailboxes to from the old dc to the new exchange server. As i said before, you need modify RUS to point to new DC, you need to replicate sysmtem folders, organisationsal forms, Freee/busy, OAB etc to the new exchange server. Replicate public folder data to the new exchange server. wait for the replication to complete.you need to check individually that can see the contents and items are same on both servers.

if you think you are not confident if the new DC will function fully. can i ask u a quick question- why would you like to take the old DC away? leave it as it is. Leave the old DC as it is. install exchange on the new server, transfer mailboxes to the new server, public folder , system folders and other exchange related roles to the new server. once transferred stop exchange services on the old DC. you need to perform various checks if exchange is full functional. well it would be functional. you might have problems with public folders, system folders if you dont create a replica and allow it to replicate. i feel the above is better.

Thanks Lancy! When installing the new exchange server on the new server; should I choose Install a new exchange server or additional exchange server in the setup options? do I have to run ForestPrep again on the new exchange server?

The Old Server/First server is a DC and exchange 2003(MAIL) within domain.com The new DC/Exchange (MAIL2) is joined to domain.com. during exchange installation of the new exch server I chose: setup as an additional exch server. and I did run domainprep only. what do you think of this? I did move the operations master role to the new server. and Promote the new server as a GC and also moved some mailboxes for testing. after that I had problem connecting to OWA from outside, it's redirecting me to the new server MAIL2!! I have no problem connecting to OWA from local network at all! which I am not ready to roll it into production yet! as I want to heavily test it before!!. Thank you Lancy!

Now Outlook clients got updated automatically to connect to mail2.domain.com. and same thing with OWA every time I type mail.domain.com/exchange it redirects me to mail2.domain.com/exchange! any idea why? as far of the steps I made I only did the following: move the operations master role to the new server. Promote the new server as a GC. I rolled back the steps above to see if I could get the same functionality I had before but no luck! Thanks!

OWA Functionlity- you will redirected to the server that your mailbox resides on. so thats not a problem. move you mailbox back to the old server and then you will see it OWA redirected to mail.domain.com
