Hi, I need to replace the hardware for my current Exchange 5.5 server. I would like to avoid using tape backups of my current Exchange 5.5 Server to set up the new server. Here is what I was thinking of doing. Install NT Server on the new hardware Install Exchange Server 5.5 on the new hardware. Install to the same organization, but different site as the current Exchange 5.5 configuration. Set up Public Folder replication between the Exchange Servers. Move my users to the new Exchange Server. I believe there is a tool that will move users from one Exchange site to another. Has anyone tried this before? What problems am I likely to encounter with this scenario? Thanks. Dan

No, No, No, No, No. Install NT.
Install 5.5 to same site.
Move the users at your lesuire.
Leave the original server in place for a good while. This will allow the users profiles to automagically redirect to the new server.
After a month or so follow the Q article, can't remember number, to remove frist server from site. This method has extremly low risk, and if you move the users a few at a time low impact to them as well. If yo u can arrange for them to log off for 10-15 mins during the day in groups or individually, you don't even need to work out of hours. What I'm trying to say is it's a win/win process. Pat.

Pat has the right solution. JOIN THE SITE!
This is easy and you are under no pressure to get everything moved right away. Be sure to make the new server the primary for all items before you blow it away. Your users profiles will automatically change to the new server, no muss, no fuss. I've done this a dozen times for clients.Good Luck! quote:

Postman is right. If you do it SLOWLY over a period of a few weeks, it is seamless and invisible to the users. It even re-maps to the next exchange server with remote dial up users!
The MS article you need to follow TO THE WORD is Q152959. Remember to migrate HIDDEN FOLDERS. That one almost got me. -a
