Good day Everyone,

My Server has only 5 gigs left and is dropping quick. I think it's because we a getting a lot more emails now. I have Small Business Server 2000 which includes MS Exchange 2000 (all in one). I went ahead a purchase a Maxtor 500GB Network drive, so i can move all my data to that drive and give me more space on my server. it looks like exchange is taking 90% of my server with all those emails. How can i move my exchange data files to my new 500GB drive, and have all new emails stored on this new drive from now on?

Merv, did you solve this problem? If not, it's easy.. *if* you let Exchange do the moving for you. You'll want to do all this moving and so forth during non-business hours because, as I recall, the process will take the relevant information store offline. (I'll assume you've already formatted the new drive as NTFS and you've created an empty folder or two that's waiting to receive your Exchange databases.)

Logon to your Exchange server. (I probably don't have to mention that you need to use an account with appropriate rights, like domain admin or Exchange admin, but I'll mention it anyway.)
Open your Exchange Management Console.
Work down to your server's "First Storage Group" ("Your AD Domain" --> "Administrative Groups" --> "Servers" --> "Your Server" --> "First Storage Group")
Right click on your Private Information Store, choose "Properties".
Click the "Database" tab.
Click the "Browse" button that's next to your Exchange Database (it'll probably say something like Drive:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv.edb). Use the browser to choose the new drive and folder that will house the database.
Click "Ok".
Wait.
After that part has moved to the new drive/folder, click the second "Browse" button to move the streaming database (priv.stm).
Click "Ok".
Wait.
After the streaming database has been moved, close the Private Information Store properties window.

Now you can follow the same steps to move your public database files (pub.edb and pub.stm.)

Unfortunately, there's no telling how long it will take to move your Exchange databases. Depends on how fast the drive is, size of the database, drive controller and bus speeds, and blah blah blah.. You might get a somewhat fuzzy idea, however, from looking through your backup logs to see how long it takes to backup those files. Then take that time estimate and give it a big fat padding [1] so you include all the overhead and so forth. And you might come close to guessing how long it will take.

[1] - When telling your users how long they'll be unable to access their email, it's always better to over-estimate than to under-estimate.
