Has anyone had any experience with moving an Exchange server to a new server. if so what kind of problems did you encounter. Sorry, my Question was incomplete, I am actually migrating my current Exchange 5.5 SP3 on NT4 to Exchange 5.5 Enterprise Windows 2000 Advanced Server. This will completely replace the old server. Thanks [This message has been edited by Mbaig (edited 07-25-2000).] [This message has been edited by Mbaig (edited 07-25-2000).] [This message has been edited by Mbaig (edited 07-25-2000).]

This may seem like a no-brainer but make sure the server you move from and the server you move to are at the same service pack levels.

We have recently completed movng one server to another server. Following are the key areas : 1. We need to move each mail box one by one from the old server to new one, which needs lot of patience and time. 2. New mail server should have IMS installed and enabled. 3. DNS Server entries for MX records should be changed according to the Hostname of new server. 4. Finally, discard old mail server and give same IP address to new server. Hope this info would be useful to you. Harika

If you are moving off one server to just a new piece of hardware but keeping the name the same, joining the same site etc. it is a fairly easy process. I just did this last week due to a hardware server problem. Great article that describes the process is Q155216

One way that I have done this in the past is to do a full backup of the exchange databases and then on the new server (that has exchange installed and config'ed the same)...i restore the databases on the new server..then run all the normal utilities that need to be ran after a restore ...this way...if there is a problem..just turn off the new server...and turn the old one back on :-).....worked for me...hope this thought helps

Are you moving your Exchange Server to a new server meaning new hardware (high-end, lots of HD space, bigger memory? First, install your new server as BDC then install Exchange server connecting to the existing site where your current users reside (same organization too). From the first Exchange Server, run the Admin for Exchange and use the Move mailbox utility . If you want your old server remove and its the PDC, you can remove it and promote any of your BDC server(if you have more than one) to PDC. You can now configure your client specifying the new server name. If you want, you can implement the personal folder setup where every user have the copy of their email at their local drive, with this you can easily install new server w/o moving any mailbox. Hope this help....

We've successfully moved all mailboxes and public folders to a new server. We now want to move the IMC, are there any issues to beware of?

timaporn The web address you're looking for is: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q155/2/16.asp Or go to www.microsoft.com, and type Q155216 in the little search box at the top left of the first page. This goes for all Q numbers quoted for the Microsoft Website.

Sorry.. my problems were the result of not following the directions exactly. I tried to restore from an ON-line backup, instead of an OFF-line backup. In addition, I restored the local registry the last time I tried it (Thurs night), and it hosed the machine. Problem rectified now.
