A friend of mine is supporting some clients that are still happily using Exchange 2003 servers with one exception: Whenever certain outside clients sends an email from an Outlook.com hosted address, the email is unreadable and appears similar to this:

SFS:(51164003)(38414003)(189002)(199002)(377454003)(19580405001)(5681600

... and more of this. Does anyone have any advice on resolving this? It seems it's only with Outlook.com senders but out of hundreds of emails processed by this server a day, it only happens on a couple emails. This has been an issue since around July.

I've also the same issue with an old exchange 2003 server.
Have you been able to solve this and how?

Regards
Gert

Well, it's funny you ask that as we thought it was resolved after I moved their pop3 connector from a third party application to the SBS collector (with the timing window registry hack); however after the problem returned, it seemed the issue stemmed from a single sender domain coming from Outlook.com who simply hadn't emailed them since the summer. The only pattern in these emails is the existence of the "namprd06.prod.outlook.com". It' possible we minimized the issue when we moved to SBS pop3 connector but it definitely hasn't gone away.

Since the recipient company has concluded their project with the sending company, my friend (their IT support) has decided to simply ignore the issue for now since no one on the internet seems to have a solution and the problem is temporarily resolved.

I'd love a proper conclusion to the problem but at this point we can't offer it!

It's possible if the client moved to hosting their email directly, rather than using the pop3 connector, it might give them more control over the experience but since they're on a DHCP internet service with limited bandwidth it's not really an option.

Hi thanks for pointing me into the right direction.

It's not a SBS server so we were using a pretty old third party POP3 to SMTP collector which is called PVE. It always worked like charm and had many options to redirect the mail into exchange.

So I dedided to install a second pop collector (P3SS) which is also pretty old and in an Beta stage which won't be finished ever. But it's free and this one has less options but works perfect with the unreadable mail.

Problem solved for now.
Thanks.

That's interesting, we may have just resolved our own issue as the client referenced above was also using PVE POP3 Collector which worked very well until most recently. Since the author abandoned it, it seems there's no way to communicate with him on the problem.

Not sure why there's still a sender that's exhibiting the issue with the built-in SBS POP3 connector but at least now we know that the PVE POP3 Collector may have increased the amount.

Hi, good to know that your client also used PVE and this caused the problems with the multi part messages we both have.

PVE also has the option to convert UTF-8 messages into iso-8859-1 but this didn't solve the issue. I've more clients with PVE POP3 running and none have complained about the Multipart messages but they al have Exchange 2007 or higher. Probably it's only in combination with Exchange 2003

The message on the PVE projectsite is very clear about the fact that he has no donations and won't support it any more.

P3SS works fine for me but this also seems to be a dead project.

For now this works perfect and when new problems occur I will consider to use an external spam filter and let they deliver it directly to the exchange by smtp.

Thanks for your feedback.
