Multiple Companies or Domains - 13.May2010 9:55:51 AM

Hello there, relatively new to Exchange, passed the exam recently and fairly confident with standard out-of-the-box stuff.

I have a potential requirement to have several small companies hosted on one Exchange install. I'm happy enough (I think) that I can set this up with "Accepted Domains" etc but what I'm struggling with is what credentials these users from essentially different companies would use.

Is it possible to configure (on one Exchange instance) seperate companies email addresses and have the user credentials match their company name. That's to say can one user come along with username COMPANY1\fred and access his emails and then another user come along with COMPANY2\jeff and access his emails?

If this can be done could someone point me in the right direction?

If not what are my options?

Many thanks for any assistance that can be provided.

Cheers

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

You can try doing the below suggestion(would be good to test it)

You can create multiple child domains(COMPANY1.root.local, COMPANY2.root.local) under a one root domain(root.local) and install one exchange for all the domains.

I am not in a position to test it now, try the same and let me know.

Thanks for the reply Praveen.

I'd thought of doing this but was worried about the administrative overhead.

Suppose it would be OK for one or two but if the number of companies gets into double figures this would get messy and I'd need a lot of server tin or need to start looking at virtualization.

Thanks again.

Daniel

This may seem like a late response, but I have the answers to your questions lbsysadmin.

For the question about the users logging in under different domains (e.g. COMPANY1\al and COMPANY2\phil) it's an easy fix. All you do is add a UPN suffix to Active Directory. When you go to create user accounts, you can choose from the different domains. To add a UPN suffix, go to Active Directory Domains and Trusts and right click on "Active Directory Domains and Trusts". Then, click properties and add your UPN suffix (e.g. company2.com). After you add your UPN suffix, don't forget to add a forward lookup zone for the new domain to your DNS server. And... when the user of the added UPN suffix domain goes to logon to a computer, have them type in their username and then "@" the domain name. An example is, "phil@company2.com".

As for your second question, you can host multiple email addresses in Exchange Server 2007. All you need to do is add the domain name we added earlier to DNS and Active Directory to the Accepted Domains list and add the accounts of the users with the added domain to Exchange. If you haven't already setup OWA authentication, then all they need to do is type in their username with the "@" just like earlier "phil@company2.com".

Hope im not to late for the reponse.

I'm going to jump on the late response bandwagon but you could also add an attribute to the users and have the users stamped with the appropriate email address accordingly.

Address list seggregation might be applicable in your situation.
