i have multiple logons reporting for users! i am testing this with my account and notice that OWA will obviously show logon as HTTP, however when i close OWA the session is still open. I have several sessions from several days ago. this increases and eventually prevents users from logging on becasue they have too many open sessions. I do not think increasing the registry is a good method of allowing more sessions. any idea why the sessions dont close?

when a user reaches the limit we will get 9646 in the app log. I have allowed view access for critical users, but i am trying to determine why this is occurring. I never had this issue while under Exchange 2000.

Hiya mate, I have just been looking at this in my test lab - when I open an OWA session it creates 3 entries in the logons section of the ESM, this is normal.

When I close OWA after about 10 minutes 2 sessions clear (the remaining session is running under the NT Authority\System account) - is this similar to what you see.

Before we continue, what service pack are you running? and could you tell me if you make use of any third party applications that integrate into Outlook or OWA.

Another point would be, when you see this have you gone to the View menu in the ESM logons and then added in the Open Messages and Open attachments columns? - if so what values were you seeing?

Cheers

Hiya mate, sorry for the questions but this is one of those posts!

Do you use any third part products that working in conjnction with either Outlook or OWA - examples would be doucment management systems, e-mail archival products or indeed anti viral products.

Cheers

Hiya chap, unfortunately some more questions - sorry!

I have worked quite a lot with Unity and have seen it do some interesting things - however;

Did you Exchange environment exist before Unity was installed?
When did you see this begin to happen?
Does the unity software also run on the Exchange server?

Cheers

Hiya chap,

Exchange 2003 is supported for Unity, however there are certain prerec's I hope you don't mind me asking a further question;

I am assuming that the Unity, although installed on a different server makes use of the existing mailboxes for users to store the voice mail data from your IP phones in the users mailbox

I am going somewhere with this I promise!

Cheers

that is correct. unity forwards messages in *.wav format to the end users mailbox on Exchange. there is a specific unity acct for this, as you can see from the login sessions.
thanks, ask as many questions as you like!

Hiya Chap, I am going to make a recommendation - you might not like it, nor wish to go ahead, but, I believe that it might help.

We use Unity with our Cisco IP system supporting 6000 Voice mailboxes - at the time of implementation I had a few chats with some folks at Cisco which lead me to insist that we have a separate Exchange organisation for Unity rather than use my live system.

The reason was in Exchange 2003 SP1 (and therefore SP2 as SP's are cumulative) a restriction was placed on the maximum amount of MAPI sessions - but Unity when deployed into a live mailbox Org can go beyond this limit and thusly cause the issues that you are describing (this is further perpetuated by normal users accessing their mailboxes via Outlook or OWA).

I recommend that you ensure that;

View Information Store permissions are grated to the Unity account

-or-

If that doesn't work:

Increase the session object limit via http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830836 - I know that this is not the path that you wished to go down, but, I hope the above has given you enough info to try it and see.

I also suggest taking the information store offline at least once a week of a full offline backup which will help clear down sessions that have not cleared.

I hope that this helps - and if you try this please let us all know,

Cheers

you have provided me with helpful information. I can see this being an issues with those users on our VOIP system, however this is also an issue in remote sites that do not have a unity server. I think the solution is to set view permissions for all my users. So it is my inderstandign that under Exchagne 2003 there were no max limit on mapi connections? this would be a reason why we are experiencing users reachine a limit now that we are on 2003

Hiya chap, I am further assuming that the remote users have mailboxes on the same server as the users that make use of the IP Telephony system - if the IPT users have used up the capacity for MAPI then the rest will also suffer.

I recommend view Information store status permissions are granted to the UnityService account and that you consider offline backups as well.

in terms of Exchange 2003 (NO service pack) you are correct there was no limit on MAPI session, but from SP1 and above a limit was put in place (250 of type objMessage and 35 of objSession).

Cheers

and there was no limit under Exchange 2000? i will look into your direction. i will most likely allow the unity acct view permissions on the databases where voice messages are kept. you have been more than helpful
thanks
