Multiple client access and transport servers - 17.Jan.2012 8:48:54 AM

Hi there

For several weeks in December we had some major issues with our oldest exchange server, that runs transport, mailbox and client access roles.
All mailboxes on the server has now been transferred to a provisional exchange 2007 server only running mailbox role.

We want to upgrade the older server to WS2008, but I am very anxious about reconfiguring the provisional server for transport and CA roles. Hope someone can shed some light on the following issues;

1) Before I can demote the older server, I must configure the provisional server for CA and transport roles. Is there any precautions to be taken here? Is it perfectly OK to have two CA and transport servers in the same environment at the same time?

2) Is it problematic to install transport and CA roles on a server that already runs mailbox role? What downtime is to be expected for the users that are already located on the provisional MB role server that is to be upgraded to MB, Transport and CA during the reinstallation of the older exchange server?

3) Will our third mailserver (only running MB role) have any issues identifying that the old transport and CA server is no longer in operation, and that it is to contact the new server instead for transport and CA?

Thank you very much for any input in this issue!

Just to be sure, what do you define as the 'same environment'?

1)  You should have no problem with multiple CAS and HT servers in the same Exchange organization.  It is actually preferred so you can take advantage of redundancy.

2)  You should have no problem adding the CAS and HT to existing installation of a MB role.  I am not sure if the added roles will require a downtime, though.  Be prepared just in case.

3)  Be sure you properly uninstall the old Exchange roles from the soon to be decommissioned server so it updates Active Directory.

Here are a few things to keep in mind before you begin uninstalling Exchange roles.
  • Do you have any public folders on the old Exchange server?
  • Do you have any SSL certificates installed on the old Exchange server.  This could impact EAS, Outlook Anywhere, OWA, etc.
  • Autodiscover.  Not my area of exterprise.
  • Does the original server process Offline Address Book?
