Scenario: We installed a test exchange 2007 server, im originally a windows / exchange 2003 admin and im very lost with the new interface. Our original mail system is unix sendmail., they already setup the routing in their dns with my propper dns ip and name and added the two test user id's that i'll be testing into the sendmail system.

Where i need help:

I know i need to configure my dns and a smtp smart host routing mail from and to sendmail.?

Questions:

do i need to add an mx record to my DC/dns and use the company prexisting dns for forward and reverse lookup?

where do i go in exch2007 to configure incoming and out going smart host?

I really appreciate if you guys can damn near hold my hand to walk me thru this, i've done simple exchange administration over the years but never stood one up from scratch. Thanks a bunch !

You specify a smart host on the property page of the Send Connector, which can be found under Organization Configuration > Hub Transport.

Also make sure you allow Anonymous users under the Permission Groups tab on the property page of the Default Receive Connector, which is found under Server Configuration > Hub Transport > Hub Transport Server.

As long as the servers can see and resolve each other, then you don't need to do any adjustments to DNS.

i've made some progress. i can now send email from my exchange to users on the sendmail server. but if i try to send myself an email either from the sendmail server account or the internet i dont get anything. what would i possibly have to look at on my end, i've checked the receive connector and all information seems to be correct. so again, lost situation. but thanks a bunch for the help so far, i cant begin to express my gratitude.

Are these servers sharing the same SMTP address space (that is the same SMTP domain)?

actually the sendmail server is IMAP, and our exchange test bed is is not in the same domin space. ie. their's is jackinbox.com, exchange is headquaters.jackinbox.com.

Under receive connectors, under client and default. i put in the sendmail server IP and specific port number into the network tabs.
