We have a Exchange 2003 server where the private information store has bloated up to 100.9GB.  I have a 1221 event ID  that says it has 68635 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.  Since there is only 30 GB of free space on the drive I believe that is the ammount of space I could recover during a offline defrag.  I have 116GB of space free on a second drive on the exchange server.  Is it possible to run the eseutil on the file in it's current location and using a switch have a new defragmented database created on the drive with more room?  I realize I need 110% of the space of the current database so I am looking for options.

hi,

You can do defrag redirecting it to temp network location. There is lot of options as per your need when you are considering the fact of running offline defrag.

If you want to keep the server running all the time, you can create a another storage group and  move mailbox

I hadn't even considered creating another store.  Would creating a second mailbox store in the existing storage group and moving all the existing mailboxes to the new mailbox store be a legitimate replacement for doing the offline defrag?  It would seem to give me the same results without having to cross my fingers and hope the information store would still mount after the an offline defrag.

Is there any reason that we would need to re create the original message store and move the newly moved messages back again?

As you must be using Enterprise edition to get so large - create another store and then drop the original one. No need to go back to another store, that is a waste of time. Do ensure that after dropping the original store that you restart the server so that the system mailboxes can be recreated.

It isn't just space issues you will have doing a defrag of a store of that size, but time. Offline defrag is between 1 and 4gb per hour - hardware dependant. Therefore a 100mb store could take anywhere between 25 hours and 4 days.
