We are in the middle of two upgrades...I just installed our first Exchange 2007 server and migrated all mailboxes and public folders to it. I am also in the midst of upgrading our Forest/Domain from 2003 to 2008 R2. I had two 2003 DCs and have promoted stood up two 2008 R2 DCs. I intend to demote the two 2003 DCs and raise the functional level of the Forest/Domain to 2008 R2.
I installed Exchange 2007 before I added any of the DCs and in reviewing our installation I have found that Exchange just lists the two original DCs in the Exchange installation. How do I get the 2008 DCs added so I can demote the 2003 DCs?...all of my DCs are GCs and all FSMO roles are currently held by one of the 2008 R2 DCs.
Thanks for any information you can provide.

William

Description: Process STORE.EXE (PID=3084). Exchange Active Directory Provider has discovered the following servers with the following characteristics:

(Server name | Roles | Enabled | Reachability | Synchronized | GC capable | PDC | SACL right | Critical Data | Netlogon | OS Version)

In-site:
<2003DC1>.ad.dcpds.cpms.osd.mil CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1
<2003DC2>.ad.dcpds.cpms.osd.mil CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1
<2008DC1>.ad.dcpds.cpms.osd.mil CDG 1 7 7 1 0 0 1 7 1
<2008DC2>.ad.dcpds.cpms.osd.mil CDG 1 7 7 1 0 0 1 7 1

Out-of-site:

So I see them listed in this event log entry but do not see them listed in my Exchange Management Console as being used by Exchange.

I re-ran the setup /adprep and still don't show the new DCs in Exchange Management Console when I check the properties of the Exchange Server. Do I need to reboot the Exchange Server or stop and then restart the Exchange Services.

Did you ran setup.com /preparead or adprep? Because you need to run setup.com /preparead

Restart MSExchangeADTopology service

Sorry...I did run setup /preparead ....in the middle of standing up a couple of new DCs as well..

Restarted the service and got one of the new ones to show up...showing three of them now...

My take away here is that I need to run the preparead each time I install a new DC.

Thanks very much for your assistance!

No, you don;t have to run it everytime when you introduce new DC, I asked you to run it because permission were missing from those 2 DC's and restarting that service will discover all the DC's on the site.

Cheers,

Thank you for your assistance. It didn't completly resolve the issue...it solved a part of the problem. I did the prep and for a short time one of my DCs announced the SACL right. Only for a short while. Wanted to post this in case anyone else has a similar issue.

It ended up being the user right to Manage auditing and security log. Based upon our security settings we only allow a group called auditors to have that right....You have to include Exchange Enterprise Servers (if you have any 2003 DCs) and Exchange Servers (for the 2008 DCs)...it doesn't seem to be an issue whether or not you include the 2003 DCs in the group but makes a big difference if you have 2008 (in our case R2).

What was happening was that I was running setup /prepare AD on the 2008 R2 DC...it was changing that right until it refreshed its group policies...so it would show announce the SACL right only for a short time. By reading a few more postings/articles on the SACL right specifically I confirmed that my 2008 DCs didn't have that right, granted it in our DC Group Policy and that confirmed my issue.

Thanks again....hopefully this information will help someone else in the future.
cheers
