I want to setup a simple exchange server, which will allow me to do the following: Sync email, contacts, calendar, and tasks in between Outlook Web Access, Outlook 2003, and my cell phone (push email, via ActiveSync). Therefore, I believe i need to install Service Pack 2 ontop of Exchange Enterprise Edition. I have a domain name registered through godaddy.com, and am currently running another webserver, which uses the godaddy Total DNS Control for the DNS settings, therefore I am NOT running any type of DNS server. In order to install exchange, am I required to run a DNS server as well? I have Windows Server 2003... Also, any tips on what "A" names or "CNames" or "MX" records that I need to define would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! -Josh

Hiya Ace, There are a number of possible answers to your question, all of which depend on a number of factors; 1. What version of Exchange do you have Standard, SBS (Small Business Server) 2. How many Servers do you have at your disposal (in order to achieve minimum Best Practice - unless you are using SBS (where you can use 1 server), you would need three x1 DC x 1 Ex (Front End) and x 1 Ex Database. To install Exchange you will require a DNS server internally (this is for AD). Can you answer the above before we proceed. Thanks A

1. I have Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition 2. I'd really only like to use 1 server, because to be honest this will be for my personal email only as of now. I'm honestly just setting this up so I can do push email on my phone, for I have a lot of time on my hands, lol.

Ok, so as of now. I have Windows Server 2003 up and running, and I believed properly configured DNS server. Thru my registrar, GoDaddy, I have registered my server as a DNS server, and entered it for the nameserver (ns1.domain.net) and i have used ZoneEdit for my other two nameservers, and have been working on configuring those zone files and such. All in all, I have 3 DNS servers now, which should work. On my own DNS server I have setup the following: A Records domain.net -> IP mail.domain.net -> IP CNAME Records www -> domain.net MX Records mail.domain.net -> domain.net -> Rank 0 For the A records, should I assign them to my internal IP (192.168.1.x) or my WAN IP (x.x.x.x). I am behind a Firewall, and have forwarded port 53 (DNS) so if a users makes a request, it should go through if I have the internal IP set or no? Sorry for so many questions, but I can't wait to get this going! haha Thansk again!

Okay, i think i have all my host records setup properly. Now I have exchange installed, then installed SP2. Now, I cant receive mail or send mail. I have used SMTPdiag.exe from MSFT, and everything went thru Green/Good, except connecting to ie: gmail.com servers, says couldnt deliver mail, couldnt connect. Same for hotmail.com, etc. I CAN telnet to my mail.domain.net server via SMTP 25, and delivers a ready msg, so this means MX records are in order, correct? I used the Internet Mail Wizard and defined a smarthost from my ISP, smtp.host.com but it still wont work even for sending. How would one go about setting up smarthost to send mail, and setting up exchange from scratch? All I want is to be able to use one mailbox for now (my own) and be able to sync outlook on my desktop and phone, msgs, calendar, contacts, etc Thanks!
