Hi there.

I'm very new to Microsoft Servers, and have never worked with Exchange. I do however have experience with various flavours of Linux, and have setup and administered many servers with various mail configs (IMAP, Cyrus IMAP, POP3, Sendmail, Postfix, MajorDOMO, MailMan, etc, etc)

My question is regarding a new install of Exchange 2000 on an existing Windows 2000 server. It is a domain server in a small office, although many of the workstations are XP Home and just connect to the box for basic file sharing.

Cost is a very big issue in this office, since it is a charitable organization, and usually receives donations of hand-me-down equipment.

They are looking at having a shared calendar in the office, and have been using a Yahoo.com web calendar in the past for this purpose. Unfortunately, their internet connection is flaky at best, and this is not a very viable solution for the forseeable future.

Now, I've seen many places to purchase a 5-Client Licence pack (381-01399) for a fairly good price. I'm also told that I'll be able to obtain a demo CD for Exchange 2000 from a friend of mine. Will this be all that I need for a fresh installation and to meet the proper licencing requirements? Or is there a base cost for the Exchange server that I will have to purchase first? Can anyone advise me on a possible alternative solution if this is not workable? Our main concern is a shared Outlook calendar. Any shared address books, e-mail, etc are secondary.

Any Product Numbers that I should be looking for would be greatly appreciated. As I said before, cost is a major issue. I'm already aware of Microsoft's ICANN program, and we've used it in the past for charitable purposes, but we'd prefer not to use the program for our own administrative purposes.
