I've been fighting this for months now. Our domain (mail.archaio.com) cannot send email to verizon.net email addresses. After doing a lot of searching, I found and resolved a few possible causes:
1. Set the reverse ptr for mail.archaio.com to correct setting. 2. Set the problem destination address to not trip any RBL lookups via our SPAM filter. 3. Verified that there are no reverse IP lookups when we send out email via SMTP. 4. Verified we are not listed with any RBLs.
Our mailserver's external IP address is 216.9.32.211 (mail.archaio.com), but it looks like mail received from us to external addresses has the following header:
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft Exchange V6.5.6944.0 Received: by san-exch-01.cqdigital.com id <01C59C66.23B71B23@san-exch-01.cqdigital.com>; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 15:11:34 -0700
San-exch-01 is the internal name of our email server, and cqdigital.com is name of our internal domain. We do not own this domain any longer so we cannot set records for it for the outside world. Can you think of any way to set the Recieved from: field in Exchange 2003 to reflect the proper (external) name of our mail server, or is this even the cause?
The error I get in the SMTP event log is this:
206.46.232.11 - OutboundConnectionResponse [08/Aug/2005:14:38:34 -0800] "- -?220 sv5pub.verizon.net MailPass SMTP server v1.2.0 - 013105113116JY+PrW ready Mon, 8 Aug 2005 16:38:34 -0500 SMTP" 0 108 206.46.232.11 - OutboundConnectionCommand [08/Aug/2005:14:38:34 -0800] "EHLO -?mail.archaio.com SMTP" 0 4 206.46.232.11 - OutboundConnectionResponse [08/Aug/2005:14:38:34 -0800] "- -?250-sv5pub.verizon.net SMTP" 0 22 206.46.232.11 - OutboundConnectionCommand [08/Aug/2005:14:38:34 -0800] "MAIL -?FROM: SIZE=703 SMTP" 0 4 206.46.232.11 - OutboundConnectionResponse [08/Aug/2005:14:38:34 -0800] "- -?450 Requested mail action not taken-Try later:sv5pub.verizon.net SMTP" 0 64 206.46.232.11 - OutboundConnectionCommand [08/Aug/2005:14:38:34 -0800] "QUIT - SMTP" 0 4 206.46.232.11 - OutboundConnectionResponse [08/Aug/2005:14:38:34 -0800] "- -?221 sv5pub.verizon.net closing connection SMTP" 0 41
Can you recommend anything else? I believe this is a DNS issue as most web searches on this issue seem to indicate so.
Thanks for your help!

You have to fix the domain which is used by exchange server. You have to rename cqdigital.com to archaio.com and then your probelm will be resolved.

Yes, this is done at the SMTP Default Virtual Server. Right click and choose Properties, Delivery tab. Click Advanced button. For both Masquerade Domain and Fully-qualifed domain name fields enter mail.archaio.com
Stop and start the SMTP service and then send a test message and check the header for the correct name.

Thought about changing the domain name, but not ready to take that drastic a chnage yet just simply because 1 ISP does not like our mail server. I did change the masquerade domain name in the SMTP properties (the FQDN was already set correctly), and that seems to resolve correctly in the email headers now. But I think a new problem has come up. Our PTR for mail.archaio.com (also our MX record) is set to the external IP of our mailserver, yet when SMTP sends out email, it sends it on the IP of our gateway. I had the PTR of that IP changed to mail.archaio.com, but now it does not resolve back to the proper IP for mail.archaio.com. I can't just add another A record for mail.archaio.com, can I? Wouldn't that cause routing issues if the MX record points to 2 different IPs? Is there a way to change what IP Exchange SMTP uses when it sends out email?
Thanks!
