I'm confused about OST files, size limits and performance.
All I read suggest to use Cached Mode for Outlook so that every user has a local copy of their email, it will decrease network traffic etc. But I've also read that OST's file format is horrible and when you get up to 1GB you will have problems or delays.
So what do I do with the president laptop that will without a doubt have a mailbox size way north of 2GB? We have about 130 users and most of them will hit 1GB with in a year.
What is common practice for OST files and desktops and laptops?
We have Exchange 2007 SP1

Thank you for your help
/Mats

I am not sure about OST file sizes and performance, but I do know Cached Mode reduces the load on the Exchange server. For laptop users I would configure Cached Mode, as the user will go home with the lptop or be on a plane without a connection and will still want to read e-mail or write messages to be sent once a connection is re-established.

Thank you swimxu.
So OST is the way to go for laptop users, but how will the laptop and desktop perform when the OST gets up to 2 or 3 GB?

Thank you

The performance of the client has been much improved. I an many people I know have 3GB and larger OST files and whilst you do see a lot of paging unless you've got a good deal of memory as long as the workstation is up to spec you'll be perfectly fine.

I had the question and found this article cleared it up for me.
