Ok, so after having a rough time with exchange 2003 (from the previous i.t. guy's install) I reinstalled windows small business server 2003. I have exchange working fine sends and recieves with no problems. I also how OWA from the inside of the network working great as well. My problem is when you try and go to xxx/exchange you get a page not found error. So I looked at my cisco pix and port 80 and the ssl are both forwarded approriately. I went threw iis to ensure that the ports were correct and of course they are. I do not use windows fire wall because my dc is also my domain controller. So asuming that IIs is correct and that OWA and remote sbs access work on the inside of the network what other steps hsould I take to get this working. (hopefully not reinstalling IIS)

Have a look at your IIS logs, and see if the external requests are actually reaching the server. You should be able to see the internal requests (since it is working internally) - do you see similar requests when you try to connect from the outside? Remember that the times in IIS logs are in GMT.

for some reason I am drawing a total blank as to where the IIS logs are? I was just looking at them too. Can you point me in the right direction?

ok got the log localation c:\windows\system32\logs\w3blah blah, i can see alot of log entries for local traffic, but none for external. I have deleted all but one line and will try to access OWA from an outside server

If there are no external log entries, then the external requests are either not reaching the server at all; or they are reaching the server, but the server is discarding them because its Default Web Site is configured to use a Host Header name.

Are you sure that your external clients can correctly resolve the server name they are using in the URL http://servername/exchange ? Try a ping from an external computer. The ping may not actually get a response, but it will at least tell you if it can resolve it to an IP address.

the mx record for the server is pointing to the correct ip address

when I do a properties on the default webpage in iis, I come to web site identifications, if you hit advanced you get an option to set a header name. Right now there is just tcp port 80 (default) and the ip address is "all unasigned" . Is that what you were reffering to ?

Yes, it sounds like everything is okay in the Default Web Site configuration. The host header is best left empty.

The MX record isn't really related to OWA usage, only actual mail delivery.

When they see the error message, does it say 404 - Page not found? Or does it say it can't find the server, or that there is a DNS error?

How about if they just go to http://servername (i.e. without the /Exchange)? Do they see the server's Default Web Site (usually an Under Construction page)?

This is the error in Fire Fox
The connection has timed out

The server at mail.hgpotb.com is taking too long to respond.
   *   The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
         moments.

   *   If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
         connection.

   *   If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
         that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

This is the error in I.E. 7

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage Most likely causes:

You are not connected to the Internet. The website is encountering problems. There might be a typing error in the address.
What you can try:

I am really baffeled by this problem. if I ping the mail.hgpotb.com my cisco pix answers back, so I know its getting resolved correctly.

It really looks like it's not getting past your firewall. I can only suggest that you double-check the port forwarding rules.

I have checked and rechecked the fire wall, ports that are being forwarded are http(80) and https(443)....

Does your ISP allow incoming port 80 and 443?

yes. After some more checking the http fixup protocal was wrong for my pix, after correcting that now I am getting the error "your ip address is not one of the ones aloud to access this site" and when I check out IIS logs it is logging the transaction. Any thoughts?

Sounds like you have an IP address restriction on your Default Web Site in IIS Manager. Look at its properties, and check the Directory Security tab.

I have all computers will be denied access except the following
10.0.0.3 255.255.255.0 (Machine with IIS and Exchange)
127.0.0.1(single machine)

how to I allow all ip's access?

Activate the radio button that allows all computers to access it, and then make sure the exceptions table is empty.

yes when I activate the radio button for granted access the exceptions are emtpy.

if I add my external ip into the default webpage access then it works from my machine. So I need to figure out why its blocking everything thats not added

Check to see that there isn't a separate set of restrictions on the Exchange VDir. When you change the settings for the Default Web Site, and then it asks you if you want it to propagate those settings to the subfolders, if you don't select them all then the subfolders won't inherit them.
