Hi,

I just installed fresh Exchange server 2003 to our organization. For some reason I am not able to access Outlook web access I keep getting page cannot be displayed. I uninstall IIS 5.1and reinstalled it and then installed Exchange 2003. I still get the same issue.

Can anybody let me know what is wrong?

Awaiting your response!

Thanks!

Your description isn't much to go on.

How are you connecting to OWA?
What made you think to uninstall IIS?
Did you do that to the new server, or to an old one?
How many Exchange servers do you now have in your organization?
How many BackEnd and how many FrontEnd servers do you have?

Sorry my bad.

Exchange 2003 is our first server to the organization. I just installed it. To test if the exhcange is correctly installed I just tried telnet to Exchange with port 25 and wanted to check Outlook web access I typed http://localhost/Exchange/ - showed page cannot be displayed same when I typed https://localhost/Exchange/ - showed page cannot be displayed. So I decided to get the IIS 6 to solve the issue but this didn't solve the issue so I decided to uninstall IIS6 and also IIS5 and then reinstall it this process came up with no response hence I had to look for different solution.

Hope this help.

By default Exchange 2003 never has SSL enabled for its own virtual directories.

We, never suggest to work with removing IIS to work with OWA troubleshooting as Step1 (nor would MSFT recommend) - well please answer the questions asked by Dean.

Also, which version of Windows are we working upon.?
You mentioned that you are working both with IIS 5 and IIS 6 - how did you manage to have them both setup ?
You re-installed Exchange - did you re-apply Service Packs ?
Did you check if IIS Admin service is in started mode ?
What are the default permissions you would find for OWA Virtual Directory in IIS Console ?

Ok sorry we can go into advance troubleshooting - let us have some basic answers.

How are you connecting to OWA?
I am connecting to OWA through Internet from the same Exchange server. so I type http://localhost/Exchange/ and also tried https://localhost/Exchange/ also tried http://ipaddress/Exchange/

What made you think to uninstall IIS?
If OWA didn't work I just wanted to find if IIS was the problem hence I uninstalled IIS and reinstalled it.

Did you do that to the new server, or to an old one?
We had old one and it was seized as the server was giving problems. This is a new server.

How many Exchange servers do you now have in your organization?
Just one server

How many BackEnd and how many FrontEnd servers do you have?
None. We just have frontend.

You mentioned that you are working both with IIS 5 and IIS 6 - how did you manage to have them both setup ?

IIS was installed from Windows 2003 CD and then Installed IIS6 downloading from microsoft website.

You re-installed Exchange - did you re-apply Service Packs ?
Yep. SP2 is insalled but installed SP2 directly.

Did you check if IIS Admin service is in started mode ?
Yep. It is in started mode.

What are the default permissions you would find for OWA Virtual Directory in IIS Console ?
I don't see OWA virtual directory in IIS management.

Well, if OWA virtual directory isn't seen how would Exchange help you work with OWA.

Ooops i take my words back /owa virtual directories was necessary with E2k7 not E2k3.

However, the virtual directories in total should be

Microsoft-Server-Active-Sync
OMA
ExAdmin
Exchange
Public
Exchweb

If its a clean install then you have gone further with diagnosis than I would.
I operate on a simple basis - Exchange should work straight out of the box. If it does not then it is a bad install. Remove using add/remove programs, wipe the machine and start again. If this is still a new server and is having problems then that is what I suggest that you do. There is no way of knowing what else has gone wrong that you cannot see. However it is important that you remove Exchange correctly before wiping the machine so that it is removed from the domain correctly.

Simon.

As Simon suggested its better to reinstall your exchange server if does not contains any user data. It is never suggested to remove IIS after installation of exchange. The fresh install must work fine if it does not then do not uninstall IIS....there other ways to trouble shoot the OWA. Let us know the result…
