Last night another tech ran Windows updates on our exchange 2007 last night. During the update process something happend....I wasn't there so I don't know exactly what happend, but somehow all or atleast most of the services for Exchange, IIS and various other services switched to disabled. Obviously it stopped everything from working. So after starting everything and testing we got everything working, however I can't open OWA. When I goto the link, I just get a blank page but in the bottom corner of the browser it says Done but with a warning sign. The warning is as follows: Line: 7 Char: 1 Error: Syntax Error Code: 0 URL: https://x.x.x.x/owa/auth/logon.aspx?url=https://x.x.x.x/owa/&reason=0 (The x.x.x.x represents the external IP address of our server) It can only assume it's an IIS issue and I had a look through but couldn't see anything obvious. Then again I'm not an IIS expert so I don't know what to look for. Thanks

If the services were left disabled, it usually means that the update did not complete successfully. You may want to run it again. The update may have been killed off manually, because it sometimes takes hours to complete, and it's very common for an admin to terminate the process, assuming that it is never going to finish otherwise. The error message you see is a JavaScript error in the logon page. If you look at the page source in IE, and go to line 7, you might spot the syntax error.

Yeah I ran MS update again, but there's no updates to be done. I looked at the source. I don't see anything out of the ordinary. I'm just using the default pages. I haven't modified anything.

MS Update will think the update has been successful, and will not ask to do it again. Of course, it may not actually be related to your OWA problem. The correct way to solve the JS problem is to enable script debugging in your browser, and see what it is complaining about. A less satisfactory (but much simpler) way would be to disable Forms-Based Auth.

Okay I got it. I wasn't sure what the update was but Rollup 2 was installed so I uninstalled it and that seems to have fixed everything. I guess someone was impatient and didn't let it finish. Thanks for the help.

Sounds good. But it will probably want to add rollup 2 again. If you decide to give it another chance, you need to be aware that it is not unknown for it to take several hours. I've seen an E2007 update take 12 hours to rebuild its assemblies in C:\Windows\assembly.

12 hours to apply an update? It's not feasible to be down that long in a production environment. Thank goodness for those with cluster setup if that's the case. Anyway, I've just applied Rollup Update 2 on my test environment servers and it took about 10-15 min to apply it. I didn't look at the assembly directory stuff though. One thing is for sure, even though it doesn't tell you to reboot the server after applying the update, it doesn't start up those services so a reboot is in order just to be on the safe side.

10-15 minutes is more usual, certainly. I think that the 12 hours thing was due to the absence of a recommended .Net patch. It has caught out a lot of other people, though. But the services should get started after the update; assuming they are set to Automatic, of course.
