After a serious hardware failure on our single SBS2003 server setup caused I think by a lighning strike nearby I have had to rebuild a new server, with new users (I made the mistake of giving the new users exactly the same username as the old users thinking this would be better). As a result a user on a client computer has an orphaned Outlook ost file that she can't open because when she logs on as that user (because it has a different SID) it's actually a different user.

Is there a way to reactivate the old user's logon files? (I have access to them if I log on as the local administrator, but that doesn't mean that I can do anything with the ost file. I could purchase specific software to convert the ost to a pst file, but is there a way around this?)

Outlook OST file can be accessed with the same profile that created it. To access disconnected ost file you always need to convert ost to pst file.

You can get back access to your emails and contacts from local pst file or from your ost file if you have, you can convert ost file to pst and then can extracr pst file to your outlook. go for Kernel for ost to pst recovery software through which you can do so. for more details go to - Kernel for ost to pst

I think converting the ost file to pst file is a wise option, though it cost some money.

We cannot connect an orphaned Exchange ost file to a new Exchange server mailbox.

There are 3 things that must match- MAPI profile on client machine, .ost file and user mailbox. if any one among these thing get change the others will fail. There are many situations due to which an Exchange OST file gets orphaned . for example : accidental deletion of user mailbox, migration to another MS exchange server, damaged Exchange mailbox profile etc.

Using a ost o pst converter is the only option to access the orphaned .ost files. There are many ost to pst conversion software available in the market with advanced features. One such tool is : http://www.recover-computerdata.com/ost-pst-converter.html

Ost to Pst converting is easy owing to ost pst. Utility can restore .ost and .pst files in case unsuccessful operation of converting. Tool starts under Win 98 and later.
