I recently Installed x2007 with All three roles on one server with no Edge in Environment (as we already have Antispam & Firewall in place) and with Co-existance of X2003.
I still want to send message through X2003. I am able to receive the mails from external domains to x2007 but when I am trying to send it through external domain it's failing.

Creating Internet send connector solved the problem, but like I said need to route through Exchange 2003 only..? Any expert comment..!!

I have read this at some exchange forum - if you have a send connector (E2k7)and a SMTP connector (E2k3) - mails would take preference from E2k7 box - so if you want mails to go from E2k3 - delete the send connector on Exchange 2007 box.

Then how will it exchange the emails between 2003 and 2007..? If I delete the connector on 2k7.

Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 talk over routing group connector.
Send connector is normally created to send emails to internet.

Thanks,

If I delete the send connector that I created on x2007, then messages sent from x2007 mailboxes do not reach the internet.

X2007 users can still communicate with internal x2003 /7 users but x2007 users can't send email externally.

Is there anyway for mail from x2007 users to be routed to the internet via x2003..?

Do you have a SMTP Connector in place for Exchange 2003 box ? Also, does the routing group connector exist between Exchange 2003 and 2007 in place ? Are E2k3 users able to send emails to E2k7 box ?

Please restart SMTP / RE service on E2k3 box once you delete the Send Connector and Transport service on E2k7 box.

Thanks again for your time.

Here is the scenerio. We have only one x2003 in our envt. on windows 2003 member server. Mails are routing through our firewall. We installed x2007 with most default settings and all roles on single server (Mail, Client and Hub). Now mails are exchanging fine between x2003 & x2007. We can receive mails on x2007 through internal n external Domain.

But we are not able to send mails to external Domain (ex. Yahoo, gmail, xxx.com) from x2007. If I create a send connector (Internet) things are fine but we would like to route mails of x2007 thru x2003.

I know creating send connector (Internet) resolved the problem but we don't want to route the mails directly thru x2007, instead x2003.

So far there is no send and or Transport connector created by us. everything is default.

Why don't you create a internet connector with address space * and smart host specifying your E2k3 box ?

Thanks a Lot.

I did that before and it did not work. But I got hint with your reply.

Solution was : I granted Relay permission in 2003 to pass the message from x2007.

Thanks again.

Another Blunder.

Now after testing when we deleted the send connector, mails from x2003 destined to xternal domain still trying to route through x2007 and failing.

Any suggestion.

Here i got the solution.

After testing sucessfully routing through x2003 I removed the send connector from x2007 and removed the Relay access from x2003 as well. So technicall the envt.  should come back to the original state. But shocked to learned exchange 2003 is not smart enough to handle the change.

So here is the solution I found after much research.

The fix is : either create the outbound SMTP send connector on the Exchange 2007 server before you create the RGC, or create an SMTP connector on your Exchange 2003 server before you create the RGC. Which option you pick depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
