I am testing a Exchange 2010 setup. The clients are mainly Outlook 2007. I am a newbie in the sense that I have not had a exchange setup before. Right now the exchange works and I am able to send and receive mails. I have setup outlook and even a blackberry to send and receive emails. I have a few questions though. For the blackberry I connect using OWA and it works fine. I like it as it is encrypted (https).

I was wondering if I could use the same for Outlook 2007. I did not see an option though. I guess I can enable Outlook anywhere on CAS. The problem is that when I go to connect to exchange mailbox using http -> exchange proxy settings -> use this url to connect, I do not have a https option. It asks me enter the url after http. I was also wondering if I could use the owa link here, but I am not sure how.

If I don't use outlook anywhere and use the normal exchange connection, what ports are in use and is it encrypted.

Links would be great as well.

The purpose of Outlook AnyWhere is so you do not have to open a whole range of ports on your external firewall. Please check the exchange proxy settings again because it mentions HTTPS URL not HTTP URL!!

Enter the your external OWA URL (webmail.company.com) without the /OWA part.

Thanks a bunch. That was very helpful. I checked another laptop and it was https. But on this laptop it still says http, but I will reinstall Outlook.

I was confused because owa seems like it would do whatever outlook anywhere would do. So I was wondering why would I enable outlook anywhere if owa already works.
But just to confirm with Outlook anywhere, the only port I will need is https, right?

Btw, when I tried it, I got a message saying that the proxy server's security certificate is not from a trusted CA. Unable to connect to proxy server. Error code 18.
-> Is this because I am using a self signed cert. But the weird thing is that I am still able to send and receive emails.

Please advice.

Yes, you are correct. You need a valid certificate from a trusted CA. Recomended to be from the third party certificate provider like Verisign, Godaddy ...

You can use the same certificate for Active Sync, OWA, outlook anywhere etc.

Thanks for the info.

Could you kindly confirm what ports I would need to open on the firewall. I am able to access OWA as in https://domain.edu/owa from the browser, but I am unable to connect outlook to the exchange using either outlook anywhere or without outlook anywhere.

For outlook anywhere to work, you only need to have port 443 open. If OWA is working and Outlook AnyWhere is not, then you need to make sure you have configured Outlook AnyWhere on the CAS server(s) properly. Are you using ISA?

I would suggest you use the exchange connectivity analyzer to see what the possible issue is.

I ran the test without Autodiscover and here is what I got,
ExRCA is testing RPC/HTTP connectivity.
The RPC/HTTP test failed.
Test Steps
Attempting to resolve the host name domain.edu in DNS.
Host successfully resolved
Additional Details
IP(s) returned: correct IP

Testing TCP Port 443 on host domain.edu to ensure it is listening and open.
The port was opened successfully.
ExRCA is testing the SSL certificate to make sure it's valid.
The SSL certificate failed one or more certificate validation checks.
Test Steps
The certificate name is being validated.
Certificate name validation failed.
Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it
Additional Details
Host name domain.edu does not match any name found on the server certificate CN=HUBCASSERVER

Two things to verify:

1. Have you confirmed that autodiscover.domain.edu has been registered as a valid host on your public DNS? Make sure this name is pointing to the same IP as your OWA IP address. Also Make sure this record is created as a HOST record and not a CNAME (or ALIAS) record!

2. Verify that your have a valid certificate that contains the url for your OWA (webmail.domain.edu), the autodiscover url (autodiscover.domain.edu) and any other urls for your exchange organization. Using a self-signed certificate will not work!

Thanks for the tips.

I will check both the DNS settings (I dont have control over it though) and let know but most probably autodiscover.domain.edu does not have a host record pointing to the same IP as your OWA IP address.

Also, is there a way I can ignore the ssl errors just for testing.

Check the DNS records and lets us know!

As for ignoring the SSL errors, I do not think you understand the impact. To put it simply, your configuration is not complete! You have completed 8 steps out of 10 (for example) and you are expecting things to start working?!

A late post, but can I not just use the regular FQDN for autodiscover. The reason I ask is that when I try to create a cert in exchange console, I have an option to create a request for autodiscover in the long format (autodiscover. fqdn) or the short format (fqdn).
Please advice.

I now have both the things verified and working,

But outlook anywhere still does not work and I get,
The IIS configuration is being checked for client certificate authentication.
Client certificate authentication wasn't detected.
Additional Details
Accept/Require Client Certificates not configured.
-> I checked this and Client certs are set to ignore.

Testing Http Authentication Methods for URL https://domain.edu/rpc/rpcproxy.dll
The HTTP authentication test failed.
Additional Details
An HTTP 500 response was returned from IIS7
-> Not sure what this is talking about.

Please advise.

I think I found the problem. For some reason, Rpc and rpcwithcert sites (and folders) have not installed properly even though it is listed in the IIS manager. Is this a simple fix or should I have to reinstall CAS all over again?
