My environment is 2 DCs (one of them is the GC), new Exchange 2007 server, and an old Exchange 2003 server.

For some reason when I am setting up a new account in Outlook 2007 with the new Exchange 2007 server, it says the following error when trying to Check Name. "The action can not be completed. The connection Microsoft exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.

It is working fine if i try to enter in the old exchange server or the GC
checked DNS is working ok.

any suggestions?

Thx.

Are you exchange 2007 servers reacheable? Check for records on DNS for this exchange server. Are you able to resolve the name through IP?
If you are using Outlook 2007 then it automatically searches exchange 2007 nodes provided your CAS is working properly.

I checked that DNS is working ok. I am able to resolve the name through IP. Also it was never a DC. I am running it on Windows Server 2008 Datacenter without HyperV 64bit version SP 1. The servers are reachable.

Can you confirm that the Windows firewall service IS running on the Exchange server? If so, from administrative tools, open Windows Firewall with Advanced Security console. By default firewall profiles are enabled and some traffic may be blocked. Once it opens, right click the very top level (Windows Firewall with Advanced Security) and go to properties. Check the Domain profile, Public profile and Private profile tabs and change the drop down menu options to OFF for all of them. Try Outlook connection after that and give us the results please.

Do you have IPv6 enabled on the Windows 2008 exchange server? What OS are the DCs running?

Windows firewall is off.

IPv6 isn't enabled on Exchange server 2007. It is a virtual machine by the way. The new DCs are running Server 2008 x64 r2 datacenter edition. There is also an old DC running Server 2003 and its not a GC. And an old exchange 2003 server running.

Which of the domain controllers is running the GC role? Would it be possible to make the Win2K3 server a GC as well?

Here is the breakdown:

NewDC01 - DHCP, DNS (Server 2008 x64 R2 Datacenter)
NewDC02 - GC (Server 2008 x64 R2 Datacenter)
NewExchange - (Server 2008 x64 Datacenter) (Exchange 2007)
OldDC - NOT a GC (Server 2003) still running
OldExchange - (Exchange 2003) still running

I have to find out about making the Win2k3 server a GC. Is that necessary?

If the FSMO roles are all on the same machine then i'd recommend having ALL DCs configured as GCs! Reason for this is because the infrastructure master role cannot reside on a global catalog server with the exception of when all DCs in the domain are GCs.

Are there any limitations or drawbacks for making all DCs in the domain GCs?
Is this why in Outlook, when setting up an Exchange account, I enter in NewDC02 or OldExchange and click check name it resolves to the NewExchange?

Thanks

I cannot give you a definite answer to those questions without really evaluating your AD and messaging environment to be honest with you but I have seen this issue with one of my clients before.

There are no drawbacks in making all DCs as GCs, as long as the exchange server is NOT running on a DC! When you run Exchange on a DC, then exchange will only see itself as a domain controller eventhough the domain has multiple DCs. So if the server exchange is running on is a DC and not a GC, expect to see LOTS of issues!! Thats why it is never recommended to setup exchange on a DC (yet it is fully supported!).

Enable IPV6.  That will fix it even though you're using IPV4.  Doesn't make sense but Exchange 2007 replies heavily on it and won't let you install it without it being enabled so i'm guessing you've disabled it afterwards?

Try using IP instead of DNS name, or have you already tried that?  Also, put your client in a workgroup then relog back onto the domain.

If that doesn't work, you may have a DNS issue.  In which case add the Server name and IP manually to the lmhost and host files in system32 and give that a bash....

Do you want me to give you the real fix?  I'm only winding you up....

Make the default gateway of the client, the IP address of the Exchange Server and see what happens   Don't ask why, but I had the same issue a while back and it works a treat.
