I have just completed the installation of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 on a Windows 2000 Server.

From the Internal LAN, the mail accounts are working fine and the e-mail is flowing in and out.

However, from an external office, I can not connect mail accounts over the Internet.

Unfortunately, there is no VPN set up, but the mail server is accessible via the Internet.

Why isn't it working?

I keep getting error messages "The set of folders can not be opened" or "Unable to expand the folder. The set of folders could not be opened." when I try to open public folders.

It also says that the Exchange server is unavailable.

What am I doing wrong?

Check below MS KB's:

280132 - XCCC: Exchange 2000 Windows 2000 Connectivity Through Firewalls

270836 - Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 Static Port Mappings

155831 - XCCC: Setting TCP/IP Ports for Exchange and Outlook Client Connections Through a Firewall

For the sake of security it's recommended to publish MAPI over RPC through an ISA Server, also remember your ISP needs to support this.

I would recommend going with Windows 2003 Server and using RPC over HTTP with Outlook 2003 so you wouldn't have many of these security holes in your network. It may be a hard option to swallow after you just set this up, but it would make a world of difference once it is done.
