We are almost ready to power off our Exchange 2003 server now that we are migrated to 2007. We are worried that when we do, we may have some users who's outlook client will still think that their mailbox is on the old server. Is there a way to automatically update their profile when they login so they will not see any issues? Thanks!

Hi, Seems not to be a problem with the persistence of the link that almost existed in Exchange 2k0 or 2k3 : your outlook client asks to connect to his old exchange 2k3 server and this server redirects it (with profile update) to the new location of the mailbox. Test it on a new moved mailbox, better a tesing one .... Warning : this doesn't work with all clients, the older OL 98 or 2k0 < sr2 may have some problems i think. Nevertheless, I suggest you to maintain for a while (and not power off) your old 2k3 server, 'cause : 1/ the clients must join their old mailbox's location to learn about the new one and update their profile, 2/ you may have some forgotten resources on the old Exch2k3 server, just like not yet replicated public folders (client or system), generation of OAB, mailbox default public folder server not changed, routes not really twined or updated to Internet, and so on ... So don't be to hurry !

Afterthoughts : Do not forget to move also your RUS role to the Exch2k7 server, or you will have some difficult to decommission your 2k3. If you have only OL2k7 clients, don't forget the new Autodiscover feature ! If you have some outlook clients POP or IMAP, think to adapt DNS record for your users to point on a CAS 2k7 server (no really profile there ). Verify all the mailboxes you want to preserve have been moved to 2k7, and delet the other (except the two administrative one, System Mailbox and SMTP i think). Review the Henrik Walthers articles, like http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Transitioning-Exchange-2000-2003-Exchange-Server-2007-Part3.html and parts1 and 2. Just fine ones ! To follow

If you are going to remove the old server completely, then what you could do (and I have done in the past) is change your AD DNS to point the FQDN of the old server to the new server, then add a NETBIOS ALIAS to the registry of the new server so that it appears under the old server's name as well. However you MUST have finished the removal of the old server, including removing Exchange, replication etc. The old server must then be dropped from the domain and be gone completely. If anything is left it can cause a problem due to traffic loops (Exchange is thinking it is talking to another machine, not itself). It does work though and can be useful for picking up stragglers who didn't login during the co-existence period. Simon.
