Has some successfully set this up ??

As far as I am sure i have set this up correctly on the server side, but cannot get remote clients to connect or authenticate successfully.

I have read that the workstation should be connected to the domain prior to connecting via the internet!  is this correct?

I have several location and this appears to be the best solution for me.  OWA works but would prefer the Outlook via the internet solution.

Any help would be appreciated.

thankyou

thankyou for your reply,

The server is behind a firewall, and the suggessted ports have been port forwarded.

If i ping the servername (e.g sbssvr), no i will not get a reply.  If i use the public name, then yes. but the setup instructions specify to use the exchange server name.
should I add a line to the hosts file , just haveing the server name and public ip
e.g.  sbssvr                              192.35.56.3

Thankyou.

What you're asking about is Outlook Anywhere, aka RPC over HTTPS. The methods for setting it up are different compared to Exchange 2k3 and 2k7, but it only requires you have 443 (SSL) open to the mail server. Setting this up on both the Exch server and in Outlook is discussed in depth on these forums and on Microsoft's own site, as well in the Exchange server help files.

Host files, firewall port forwarding, etc is not needed.

Can you not just set up a simple PPTP VPN and then simply open Outlook?

You could, but that would defeat the purpose of being able to use Outlook with Exchange from anywhere without any extra steps.
