Hi, We run an exchange server 5.5. Recently we imported department mailboxes from a unix/webmail system to our exchange server for our staff to access using IMAP and Outlook 2007. Currently each user has an exchange account and their associated IMAP account setup in there outlook 2007 clients. Each IMAP account is accessed by roughly 2 - 7 users at a time The problem we have is that when adding the imap account to a new user or making changes to subscribed folders, the users exchange account starts responding to mail that was sent to the imap accounts, in the subject line of all of the emails is a NOT READ: and the subject /sender of the emails, I suspect that all of the old imported mail that had read receipts is being processed each time a new user is accessing it (and when some changes are made to the IMAP folders) and then sending responses. Is there anyway i can prevent this from happening? -nathard

You've spent on Outlook 2007 but left your Exchange at 5.5? You're accessing Exchange over IMAP? Using Outlook 2007? My answer to you would be to stop, simply stop what you're doing.

Well put.. and i agree. However.. We use Outlook and IMAP because it allows us to share and save our sent-items on multiple mailboxes without effecting the exchange accounts sent items and vise versa. unless there is a way around this problem? which according to my other thread isn't possible without the use of 3rd party software. see thread:(http://forums.msexchange.org/m_1800463582/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#1800463582) The 3rd party software available is terrible. I am aware that there are bugs in the IMAP protocol in outlook 2007 but is there no way around this? on second look we are running exchange 6.5 enterprise but will upgrading to exchange 2007 resolve these problems? any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm seeing a similar issue with IMAP on Oulook 2007 talking to GMail, so it's not just a problem with Exchange 5.5. In my case, Outlook is automatically sending out "NOT READ" replies to spam messages in GMail's "Spam" folder. This is happening even though I've disabled all of Outlook's automatic message tracking options (Tools -> Options -> Preferences -> Email Options -> Tracking Options). Unfortunately, I don't think Microsoft sees Outlook's IMAP connectivity as much of a priority, so I'm not holding my breath for any fixes...

Thanks very much for your response, I had a read of the post a while back and concur that its probably not something that will be fixed, I tried everything possible to avoid it, changed smtp servers, disabled all options from the server and client end, all to no avail. We ended up working around the issue by using OE for our department mail, it manages imap much faster and can also do recursive searches with ease. We use outlook for personal exchange accounts and public folders to share calendars its worked out really well. Its very disappointing to see that the imap bug wasn't resolved in the last service pack release. I am worried about how to work around this in future releases of exchange when they phase out public folders. I hope its fixed before then.
