I am dealing with a very frustrating issue. There are three or four e-mail domains that I cannot get mail delivered to from within my internal network. The mails just sit in my queue and I eventually get a noitification that they have expired. I have done nslookup on the mx records of these domains to get the IP address and name of the mail servers for the domains. I have tried to telnet to the domains' mail servers and I get the 220 message that a connection has been made.....However, as soon as I try to type anything (such as EHLO or HELO) the connection drops. When I am off network (home, for instance) I can send mail to the domains successfully and also successfully complete the EHLO commands from telnet. Does anyone have any knowledge of what might be wrong that would allow me to successfully make a telnet connection, but then have it drop as soon as I try to type. I feel that if I can determine what this connection issue is, than that will expose the reason why mail is not getting delivered to those domains. Thanks in advance

What is the reason the queue tool is giving for not delivering? What does the NDR say?

From your server that has the sending failure, how does a manual telnet session work out? Can you send simple stuff that way as a test? I am curious why there was not a "DNS Retry" or an SMTP error code.

Thats the wierd thing. When I try a manual telnet test from the server, It connects to the remote mail server...I get the 220--{greeting}, giving me an indication that everything is OK. But when I try to type ANY command, the telnet connection drops. Just kicks me out. And stranger than that....when I am off network (at home), I can do a telnet test and it works. I'm really confused as to why for these three domains (that I know of) messages aren't being and delivered and I get the same failures on the telnet test. The telnet connection drop really has me puzzled.....what would cause that as soon as a key is pressed?

1. Authentication issues. Can we assume that being an internet-based connections that you are not being expected to establish a TLS with them based on your IP or domain name? 2. The far end doesn't like your address (blacklisted for some reason). 3. The far end doesn't like your DNS PTR. 4. Some strange filtering on the far end that simply does not like your IP for another reason, like being locally blacklisted by a user? I would think #2 or #3 are most likely.

I get that exactly when I am off my network (Meaning that I am at home using my personal Internet connection) However when I am on my work network (where users are not able to e-mail to this domain...along with a few others) I get this when I initiate a telnet connection.....which looks slightly different....notice -500 instead of -600 220-gator816.hostgator.com ESMTP Exim 4.69 #1 Thu, 17 Dec 2009 17:49:24 -0500 220-We do not authorize the use of this system to transport unsolicited, 220 and/or bulk e-mail. However as soon as I type the "h" for the helo command I get "Connection to host lost" It makes no sense
