I'm having problems with /forestprep, trying to install Exchange 2000 (120 day evaluation version), on Windows 2000 Advanced Server (120 day evaluation version). Both discs are official microsoft, they are with the Implementing & managing Microsoft Exchange microsoft paperwork that i have with it. First problem i hit was exchange REQUIRED Windows 2000 service pack 1 - which didn't come on the discs microsoft supplied, so i installed windows 2000 service pack 4 instead. I have my machine configured as domain controller, on a domain of aard.inside (which is just a test machine, not connected to the internet yet), and i have followed the microsoft provided instructions regardin installation etc from their paperwork, yet when i try and run exchange setup forestprep (X:\setup\i386\setup.exe /ForestPrep), I am getting the same error: The component "Microsoft Exchange Forest Preparation" cannot be assigned the action "ForestPrep" because: - Either you do not have permission to update the Active Directory schema or Active Directory service is currently too busy. I have checked Enterprise Admins & Schema Admins permissions, and i appear to have all the correct permissions. Am i missing something? Could do with some help! this is my first install, as i need to get experience with this which i havent got yet, as i have a possible job starting next week, but i need to have some exposure to exchange 2000 to do it! Thanks in advance.

as an update, though i still have this problem remaining, i found information on microsoft.com to do the following add a key with the name Schema Update Allowed to: hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\ntds\paramters then change it's value to 1 This is supposed to enable write access, however, I STILL get the same error....

Further update: NOW FIXED i had disabled the Remote Registry Service - apparently this is needed for Exchange to be able to install properly.

IT's NOT FIXED! (grr) I spoke to soon, Microsoft Exchange 2000 setup gets almost to the very end of forestprep, then i get the following error: Setup failed while installing sub-component Microsoft Exchange Organization-Level Container Object with error code 0x8000500C (please consult the installation logs for a detailed description). You may cancel the installation or try the failed step again. Any suggestion would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!
