Problems with SMTP connectors to block domains - 24.Aug.2008 11:40:28 PM

Hi all,

I'm having a painful time with SMTP connectors on an SBS box to block users from sending email to a specifed domain.

There already was an SMTP connector in their called SmallBusiness SMTP Connector, that has an address space of * with a cost of 1.

I created my new SMTP connector, added the domain I wish to block to the namespace, with a cost of 1, Under Delivery Restriction I have tried setting By default messages from everyone are Rejected, and even added a specific user and group to the reject messages from fields. I then changed the cost of the * namespace in the SmallBusiness SMTP Connector to 50.

However I think the problem is the SmallBusiness SMTP Connector is still overriding it, as I can still send email to the blocked domain. If I removed the * namespace from the SmallBusiness SMTP Connector, my email is blocked. But so would all outbound email I believe.

Can anyone assist me where I'm going wrong? Surely is must be something simple.

Regards,
Adrian

What you have done should have blocked the messages.
It is the same process I have outlined here:
http://www.amset.info/exchange/restrict-internetmail.asp

After making the change, did you restart any services? If you tested it immediately then things might not work. If you restart the SMTP Server Service and the routing service, then test again, you may see some improvement.

Simon.

Hi Sembee,

I've triple checked everything and still can't see why it isn't working.

I've created an SMTP connector called Blocked Domains, and here are some screen shots of the settings:

The domain in the namespace is in the format domain.com.au, with a cost of 1.

I've setup by default messages are rejected. I've also added some specific users to Reject Messages From fields. And I've added a group that has everyone in it.

Then I have the default Smallbusiness SMTP connector, with * as a namespace and 50 as the cost. No other settings have changed here.

I have restarted the SMTP service and Exchange Routing service after making these changes, but still I can send email to domain.com.au in the blocked domain SMTP connector.

It is starting to annoy me!
Is there anyway of tracking what SMTP connector my outbound email is using?

Regards,
Adrian

Have you made any registry changes for the permissions to work correctly?

Simon.

Hi Simon,

I have made this registry change:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RESvc\Parameters]
"CheckConnectorRestrictions"=dword:00000001

I have restarted the SMTP service and the Message Routing service.

I'm still stumped.

I have nothing else to suggest, as I have done it many times and it has worked for me using the instructions that I have written.

Is there any way of auditing or tracking what SMTP connector the outbound message is using?

Not that I am aware of. Message tracking doesn't show it, and there is nothing else in Exchange that would.

There is always a chance that the connector isn't being seen by Exchange, in which case you could try removing all SMTP connectors, then restarting the routing service and recreating them all, starting with the restriction one.

Simon.

Thanks for the idea,

I'll try that after hours tonight.
