Further to my Public Folder Items - "disappearing” posting of 20.Apr.2007 5:24:59 AM (copied below), the situation now appears even stranger: A contact folder which had 67 contacts in it and to which no user has delete rites was backed up on Friday night by which time the folder only contained 9 contacts. Then, first thing on Monday morning the folder only contained 7 contacts, yet between the time of the back-up and the time the folder was checked no one had access to the folder. We currently have two occurrences of connected Exchange Server 5.5 running on two servers. Within Exchange Server we have several public folders – one public calendar and three public contacts folders – the public folders are available to different groups of users. We have problems with calendar items and contacts “disappearing” from the folders. The anonymous and default permissions on all folders are all set to none. Taking one of the public contacts folder as an example. All but two users have Reviewer permissions only. The other two users have Publishing Author permissions. On the last day a whole group of contacts “disappeared” one of these two users was on leave and the other is adamant that she did not delete any contacts. The exchanges server files are backed-up using Veritas Backup Exec Version 9.0 and there does appear to be some strange conflict with this as well as all public folders are set to have a full backup taken every night but, at random intervals, no backup is taken. Has anyone else experienced any similar problems? If so I would be extremely grateful for any help that can be offered.

Hiya, I had a similar problem (although it was with Exchange 2003) where I would have a number of public folders "vanish" every night. Each day I would have to restore them from backup - re-check all the permissions (no one had the rights to remove them) - but sure enough come the next day they would be gone. In the end I traced the problem to replication - in this particular environment I have two cluster Exchange servers - the items that were disappearing would not replicate to the other server (even though they were configured to) - and as a result when it came to the second server replicated its contents back it was removing the folders on the other server as it did not contain the relicas. What I did in the end was to copy each of the folders to a PST, delete the folders on each each server - then manually set them backup and force a replication of the new instances - when i was happy that they were replicating I copied the items back in. Since then I have had no problems. Not sure if that will help, A

Thank you for this information - sorry not to reply sooner - I thought I had set myself up to receive notifications of any responses but I must have got that wrong. Cheers.
