I have several queues within the Exchange System Manager that have emails that I cannot delete. Under the sender there is no value and when I right click on the message, all I get is the properties. I beleive that this is causing the queue to lock up and preventing other messages from going through.
Is there another way to clear the queue? I am restarting the server this weekend so I would imagine that this will clear everything but I am not sure.

What are the names of the queues?
How long ago was the Oldest Message Submitted?
Do the recipients look valid?

The queues are less than 30 days old. There are messages after the messages with no sender that are valid. The messages with no sender I cannot view any details on the individual messages, if that makes any sense.

It could be a post master message. How many emails that you find in the queue with the same "<>"

As an example I have a queue named Metalmax.com

It has 5 results when I find messages:
The first is blank sender, retry state, message size 66,625, time submitted 3/4 6:42 am, same time received by server, time expires 3/6 6:42 am and subject is hidden I have four messages with similar settings except retry state is queued or retry. I have a fifth message with the sender being my purchasing manager and the retry state as retry. Time submitted is today with expiration in two days.

I have 3 queues all with similar problems.

See if the recipient filtering is enabled in the global settings and on the DSMTPVS

if not enabled it and delete those emails and monitor it

The receipt filter is checked in the global settings, but I do not know what the DSMTPVS is.

What is it and where do I find it?

First - by DSMTPVS he is talking about the Default SMTP Virtual Server.

Second - since the queue actually has a name, it indicates that Exchange is attempting to send messages to that domain. VJ is also correct in that these are likely NDR messages trying to go out. It is also likely that the recipient addresses don't exist. This is a very common effect of spamming.

My question remains how do I get rid of these emails? They are blocking my emails that get sent our in bulk to potential buyers of our steel.

If in fact my suspicions about the outbound messages are correct (NDRs), they should not get in the way of other messages being delivered. They are retried on a schedule and eventually time out.

On the other hand, there is a small possibility that they are in the way. In that case, highlight the queue name and click Find Messages. Click Find Now and you'll be presented a list of messages. You can right-click any of the messages and select Delete with or without NDR.

I have tried highlighting the message and hitting delete with notification except that the only option on those messages is properties.

I am going to reset the server on Sunday and I am hoping that the standard Microsoft fix all will apply here.

Did anyone find a resolution to this issue? We have the same problem. Queued messages with no sender or recipient and no option to delete them with or without NDR.
We are running a single Exch 2003 SP2 server with Mcafee Groupshield 6.02.

They have been queued since March 2nd.

Appears like a reverse-NDR attack. abc@yourdomain.com received lots of messages from invalid external addresses (which are spoofed addresses), and Exchange is trying to send an NDR to those remote addresses. Since the sender address is invalid, the postmaster messages keep queuing up, causing slow mail delivery for other valid mails in queue.

Several ways to clear these postmaster messages:

1> Create a bogus smtp connector, smart-host all mails to an invalid IP (99.99.99.99). All mails now would be queued up in a single queue by the name of the connector. Open the queue and search for all mails from <postmaster@yourdoamin.com>, and delete all of them.
If you don't find delete option, skip to next step..

2> Stop the DMSTPVS (Default SMTP Virtual Server), navigate to C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\ and rename the vsi1 folder.
(The queue directory path can be verified from properties of DSMTPVS/Messages tab)
Once done, start the DSMTPVS, which should create a new queue!
However, old valid mails are still in old vsi1\queue folder

I don't think it was an attack. For one thing, there weren't enough in the queue - maybe 30 or so. Most of them had duplicate "real" entries from legitimate senders in the queues that I could delete. I followed the advice of someone else on the thread and rebooted the server - the offending emails disappeared.
