What happens when you dismount the mailbox store?

I'm assuming that the users cant send or recieve messages, but will the messages get bounced for the time the mailbox is dismounted or does the exchange server hold on to them?

I'm having a problem with norton and it says to dismount the mailbox store and just want to know what i'm getting into BEFORE i do it.

Mail will not get delivered, nor will users be able to check their mail. If this server is directly connected to the internet, mail may get queued up at the server right in front of yours. More than likely, though, your SMTP virtual server will continue accepting mail, which means it will get queued up locally awaiting delivery.

Outgoing mail from users' desktops will sit in their outgoing mail folder.

So this is not a huge thing to do?

Are there many problems doing this? Is it very common to have problems remounting the store?

I have a knowledge base document form symantec where it tells me to dismount the mailobox store run a command and then remount it.

I just want to know what to expect before doing this.

Thanks for the reply!

No, taking a mailstore offline isn't usually a big deal administratively (users get upset, so you'll probably want to do it off hours).

What command does Symantec want you to run? Is it an Exchange command, or a Symantec tool?

After you dismount the store, I would suggest making a backup copy of your mailstores and streaming files. Though ISINTEG is an MS utility, you can't be too careful when it comes to automatically fixing database tables.

Is there anything you can tell me about this utility?

isinteg, i've been reading that it is a integrity checker but i would like to know if anyone has used it?

On the symantec knowledge base document they say to use the -fix switch but on the microsoft web site they say only use that switch with the advise of MS tech support.

Can someone lend advise?

The ISINTEG -FIX utility will correct any problems with the links between the Exchange database tables. As was previously stated, make an offline copy of the database prior to running.

Hey guy,

I just wanted to let you know my progress with this problem.

I ran that command the symantec article said to and that didnt stop the error message from appearring.

So i called symantec. I spoke to a tech and he ran me thru a bunch of settings on my Symantec Anti-Virus/Filtering 3.0 program. What he found was that the Diagnostic logging on the exchange server was set to maximum and he called it "debug mode" because it logged EVERY e-mail that went out. He said it was doing it's job. There was no article about that but there will be one by Monday March 31st. They are going to e-mail me a copy of it, when they do i'll post it here.

Thanks for the help !
